A pioneer of women’s athletics at Texas State, in 1977 she was the very first recipient of the Jean Smith Outstanding Female Athlete Award.  This award is given annually to the top female athlete at Texas State.  In 1984, Pogue was one of the first original 18 women inducted into the formerly all-male  "T" Association.
Pogue was an outside hitter for the Bobcats throughout her career and stepped in as a setter her senior year. For her accomplishments on the court, Pogue was named team captain her sophomore season, and co-captain of the team during her junior and senior seasons. In 1977, she was named the team’s most valuable player.  As a member of the track and field team, Pogue competed in the discus and shot put.
While attending Texas State, Pogue was a member of several different groups and organizations. She was a member of Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities and the Honor Academic Fraternities of Sigma Delta Pi (Spanish) and Delta Psi Kappa (Physical Education). Pogue also made the dean’s list three out of her four years at the university. In 1977, Pogue graduated with honors while receiving a bachelor of science in Physical Education. She later went on to earn a master of science in Health and Physical Education from Lamar University.
After graduation, Pogue became a teacher at Hays High School and was awarded teacher of the year for the 1978-1979 school year. In 1980, she was an assistant coach on the Hays 2-A State Basketball runner-up team and coached the 2-A State Track Mile Relay finalist team.  In late 1980, Pogue accepted a position as an assistant men’s and women’s volleyball coach at Lamar while she worked on her master’s degree.  In the summer of 1981, Pogue continued to play and coach volleyball, including a stint as an assistant coach/player for the USA Christian Volleyball team during trips to Brazil and Argentina. From 1982-1984 she served as an assistant volleyball coach at Texas State. Pogue was also assistant coach for Texas State and Lamar while they competed in the United States Volleyball Association in the off seasons.
Pogue spent a total of over 26 years as an educator, including positions with Hays, Alice and Alpine Independent School Districts.  During her teaching career, she served in numerous roles including physical education and Spanish teacher, tennis coach, volleyball coach, track coach and basketball coach.  Pogue retired from the Alpine Independent School District in 2007 after 15 years of service.
Today, Kay lives with her husband Jimmie in Alpine, Texas. They have one child, Aliston, who also graduated from Texas State with a degree in finance.  Kay continues to support the Bobcats by donating to the Texas State Volleyball program and has participated in “T” Association events for several years.
