BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –  On day one of the 2024 Sun Belt Conference Track and Field Indoor Championships, the Texas State track and field team had four athletes find the podium in the finals of their respective events and one relay team place third and set a new school record.Â

After day one, the Texas State women's team was leading the team standings while the men's team was sixth.
Men's long jumper
Chris Preddie was the lone Bobcat to bring home gold on day one of the conference championships. Preddie recorded a 7.47m/24-6.25 jump to secure first overall and win his first indoor title in the event. He is back in action tomorrow in the finals of the triple jump.Â

The women's field events saw two Bobcats bring home silver on day one of the meet. In the women's weight throw
Elisabet Runarsdottir recorded a mark of 20.80m/68-3, which set her PR and set the sixth-best throw in school history.Â

In the women's long jump,
Mathilde Canet placed second with a jump of 6.02m/19-9. Canet will be back on day two to compete in the finals of the high jump and the triple jump.Â

Multi-athlete
Luize Opola had a record setting day in the women's pentathlon, when she set the seventh-best point total in school history with 3716 total points and placed third overall in the event. Opola had a standout performance in the shot put section of the event when she recorded a throw of 13.04m/42-9.5. This mark not only set her PR but was the best throw in the event by 1.66m.Â

The women's DMR squad, made up of
Alexia Tiscareno Macias,
Taejha Badal,
Daniela Wisniewski and
Abigail Parra, made history tonight when they recorded a new school record of 11:48.49 and placed third overall in the event.

Dominick Yancy added another mark to the school record books on day one, when he recorded a 21.11 in the men's 200 meters, a mark that sits 10th-best in school history. Yancy placed first in the event and placed sixth in the prelims of the 60 meters, with a time of 6.88.Â

Shedrack Akpeki, who placed fourth in the prelims with a PR mark of 6.86, will both compete in the finals of the 60 meters tomorrow.Â

Daniel Harrold earned his spot in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles after placing first in the prelims with a time of 7.89. Harrold was the only athlete in the prelims to record a mark under eight seconds in the event.Â

Taejha Badal, qualified for the finals in both the women's 60 meters and 200 meters. Badal placed third in the 200 meters with a time of 24.02 and placed fourth in the 60 with a time of 7.48.Â

Brain West earned his spot in the finals of the men's 400 meters after placing first-overall in the prelims with a time of 48.17. West will be joined by
Taahir Kelly and
Shawn Collins in the finals of the 400 meters tomorrow.Â
Despite missing the podium by just three spots,
Jake Smith etched his name in the Texas State history books, when he recorded the eighth-best time in school history in the men's 5000 meters with a time of 14:40.96. Smith will be back on day two to compete in the final of the men's 3000 meters.Â
