SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State women's tennis team is seeking its fourth win of the season when the Bobcats travel to Las Vegas for a pair of matches against Southern Utah and UNLV on Saturday and Sunday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex. Both matches start at noon (Central).
Texas State enters Saturday's match against Southern Utah with a 3-7 record after dropping a pair of matches against Air Force in San Antonio on Feb. 27 and at No. 32-ranked Rice on Feb. 28. The Bobcats won three of their previous four matches against Incarnate Word, Northwestern State and Alcorn State.
Scouting Southern Utah Southern Utah has a 1-8 overall record after the Thunderbirds won their last match against Dixie State by a score of 8-1 on Feb. 24. Southern Utah also plays UTSA and UNLV in Las Vegas on Sunday. The Thunderbirds are led by Evgenia Marushko's 4-4 record in No. 2 singles. Vernika Rogova has a 2-6 singles record in No. 1 matches for the T-Birds.
A Look At UNLVUNLV is off to its best start in school history with a 9-0 record heading into Saturday's match against UTSA. The Rebels are coming off a 6-1 victory over Colorado State in their first Mountain West Conference match of the season.
Carol Zi Yang is ranked No. 61 in singles by the ITA's latest rankings after compiling a 10-2 record this year and an 8-1 record this spring. She is 4-1 in No. 1 dual matches this spring. Yang also teams with Alwen Zhu and they are ranked No. 47 by the ITA with a record of 9-1, including a 7-0 record this spring.
Bobcat notesAna Perez,
Eva Dench and
Pippa Carr led the Bobcats against No. 32-ranked Rice. Dench and Carr combined to win their doubles match against the Owls, while Perez scored Texas State's single point with her victory in No. 5 singles. In another singles match on court one, Dench took nationally-ranked Lindsey Hodge (81) to three sets before falling 10-7 in the final set.
Texas State played at Rice after dropping a 5-2 decision against Air Force last Saturday in San Antonio.
Perez and
Katy Collins scored Texas State's two points against Air Force. Collins won her No. 4 match in straight sets, while Perez captured a three-set victory in the No. 6 match.
Up NextFollowing their road trip to UNLV, Texas State returns to San Antonio for a match at UTSA on March 11 in the annual Maroon-Orange I-35 rivalry. The match at UTSA marks the third time that Texas State has played a dual match in San Antonio this spring. The first two times were when the Bobcats won a 6-1 decision at Incarnate Word on Feb. 13 before the loss against Air Force on Feb. 27.
After the UTSA match, Texas State returns home to the Bobcat Tennis Complex for a pair of matches against UTEP on March 18 and Central Arkansas on March 22. The Bobcats' last home match was against McNeese State on Jan. 23.
