Eva Dench and senior
Katy Collins combined to win four singles matches and a doubles match to lead the Texas State women's tennis team in the Texas State Play Day Tournament at the Bobcat Tennis Complex on Saturday.
Dench was the runner-up for top individual player in the tournament after winning both of her singles matches and combining with Collins to defeat Tatiana Ruhl and Stacey Lackey of Prairie View A&M by a score of 8-5 in a doubles match.
In her two singles matches, Dench defeated Maria Lackey by a score of 6-2, 6-1, before winning a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) decision over Daria Pentsova of UT Rio Grande Valley.
Collins also won both of her singles matches over Alena Shichkova of UTSA by a score of 3-6, 6-2, 10-8 and Dannick Boyogueno of Prairie View A&M by a score of 6-1, 6-0.
Two freshmen players,
Yadira Rubio and
Ana Perez, also won both of their singles matches after dropping their doubles match, 8-5, against Alena Shichkova and Charleen Tiwari of UTSA.
Rubio beat Prairie View A&M's Trinity Randolph and Shaddae Findley in her two singles matches. She won a 6-3, 6-2 decision against Randolph and beat Findley by a score of 6-2, 2-6, 10-8.
Perez also won her matches over Prairie View A&M's Sydney Thomas and Neharika Rama. She beat Thomas by a score of 6-0, 2-6, 10-6 and defeated Rama by a score of 6-2, 6-4.
Pippa Carr also won both of her matches as she teamed with
Joy Chia Ming Ming to defeat Maria Lackey and Boyogueno by a score if 8-1. She also won her only singles match Stacey Lackey by a score of 6-3, 6-4.
Chia Ming Ming split her two singles matches as she defeated Ruhl, 6-3, 6-1, and dropped a three-set decision against Dominique Ibarra of UT Rio Grande Valley by a score of 5-7, 6-1, 10-3.
Bianca Birkenstock also lost both of her matches. She teamed with Thomas in doubles and suffered an 8-6 loss against Reegan Greenwood and Natacha Minc of UT Rio Grande Valley. She also suffered a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 setback against Rama in her singles match.
Greenwood earned the Top Player Award in the tournament, while Dench and Minc finished second and third, respectively after they all posted wins in doubles matches, won both of their singles matches in straight sets and surrendered the fewest amount of games in their five sets. Greenwood surrendered just nine games, while Dench lost just 17 games and Minc dropped 18 games.
