Soccer Falls In Double Overtime Heartbreaker

Box Score

LAKE CHARLES, La. -- In much better weather conditions than the last time these squads met, the Texas State soccer team fell by a score of 2-1 in double-overtime against the McNeese State Cowgirls on Friday evening in Lake Charles, La.

With the loss, the Bobcats fall to 2-3-0 overall while McNeese State picks up its fourth-straight victory to move to 4-1-0.

The first goal of the contest came at the 26:24 mark in the first half as senior Sydney Curry connected with a Tori Hale pass to get on the board. Curry's goal was launched over the goalkeepers head from the right side and buried into the back left corner of the net.

Both teams had several scoring opportunities in the first half, but defense was key in the low scoring half. Just before the Bobcat goal, the McNeese offense set up for a scoring opportunity just outside the Bobcats' box before sophomore Kristen Champion stopped all Cowgirl momentum by kicking it away.

Promptly in the beginning of the second half, McNeese answered back with a goal in the 47th minute after the Cowgirls' Kayla Goedicke received a pass from Cheyenne Ganley. Seconds before the goal, the Bobcats were charged with a foul that set up McNeese's scoring opportunity.

The remainder of the second half was a true see-saw battle with defense on full throttle. In the 75th minute of the contest, the Cowgirl offense once again set them up for a prime scoring opportunity, but Natalie Gardini deflected a shot that ended up going off the post. With several shots by both squads being denied in the final moments of the half, the game was forced into overtime.

The first overtime saw the same intense defense that had been present throughout regulation. In the first overtime, there was only a combined three shots that were fired off.

With 5:43 left in the second overtime, McNeese State's Tori Lasiter sealed the deal for the Cowgirls as she responded off a rebounded shot in the Bobcats' box.

Texas State won the shot battle 14-13 and had a total of eight shots on goal. Gardini recorded all 104 minutes in goal as she recorded two saves.

Coach Conner named the most valuable players at the end of the contest.

Offensive – Sydney Curry

Defensive – Michelle Bucy

MVP – Brenna Smith

The Bobcats return home on Sunday as they play host to Rice at the Bobcat Soccer Complex. Kickoff in San Marcos is scheduled for 1 p.m.
