San Marcos, Texas – The Texas State soccer team captured the 5-0 shutout against Prairie View A&M on Friday evening to open up the 2013 home schedule. The Bobcats and head coach Kat Conner claimed their 150th career victory as they improved to 2-1-0 on the season.
After tonight's win, the Bobcats move to 7-0 all-time against the Panthers, outscoring them 40-0 in that span. Prairie View falls to 0-3-0 to start the season.
The Texas State offense jumped out to a quick start, firing off two shots in the first two and a half minutes of action. After several back-and-forth exchanges between the squads, a deflected pass resulted in a Bobcat corner kick nine minutes into the half. Gabbi Cottee proceeded to connect off that corner kick by Tori Hale for her second goal of the season.
Just moments later, Lynsey Curry received a pass from Landry Lowe at the 18 yard mark and connected with the back of the net to record her second goal of the season. Curry wasn't finished though, as she took advantage of a pass from Ali Jones and scored after slipping past the goalie with just over seven minutes remaining in the first half.
Texas State finished the first half with 17 shots compared to just four by the Panthers.
After the intermission, the Bobcats continued to come out firing, launching eight shots before Prairie View was able to record its first of the second half. Almost 18 minutes into the second half, Texas State's Sydney Curry weaved through a pair of Prairie View defenders to score her first goal of the season and the Bobcats fourth of the contest.
The Bobcats also were not finished offensively as junior Jourdan Brown got a taste of the action with just over five minutes remaining in regulation. Brown broke away from the Panther defenders down the left side after receiving a pass from freshman Jamie Couch.
Texas State concluded the match with 33 total shots, the most shots taken by the squad since Sept. 25, 2011 when the Bobcats recorded 34 against Grambling (La.). Prairie View A&M recorded nine shots with five of those on goal.
Goalkeepers Natalie Gardini and Caitlyn Rinehart both saw playing time in the victory, as they recorded two and three saves, respectfully.
Coach Conner announced the MVP's for tonight's victory as follows:
Offensive – Ali Myers
Defensive – Ashley Jackson
MVP – Lynsey Curry
