San Jose, Calif. – Stellar first half shooting for Texas State, helped lift the Bobcats to a 90-67 victory over San Jose State tonight at the Spartan Center. Texas State shot a season-high 64.7 percent from the floor, and slammed down four dunks to earn the No. 7 seed in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament coming up in a few days.
“When you play your last regular season game and you feel like it's your best complete game I think that's a good time to do it,” said head coach Doug Davalos. “We didn't look bad. We didn't talk about any disappointments we've had. We had a goal, and the seven seed is pretty important. It's our first year in the WAC and we were picked last, but we finished seventh out of 10.”
Joel Wright registered his fifth double- double (21 points and 10 rebounds) to lead the pack. Matt Staff netted 15 points, nine of which came in the second half. Deonte' Jones chipped in 12 points on 5-for-9 shooting.
Vonn Jones recorded his 102nd career steal midway through the first half, which led to a monstrous dunk by Wright that gave Texas State a 21-14 lead. Texas State ended the first half on a 12-3 run to take a 52-40 lead into the locker room. The Cats shot a season-high 75 percent from the floor in the first half.
Texas State continued its hot scoring as it began the second half on an 18-8 run that was highlighted by a Ray Dorsey dunk to give the Cats a 70-48 advantage with 11:06 left to play. The Bobcats went on to rattle off five more points before the Spartans were finally able to stop Texas State's scoring spree.
Basil Brown helped spark the Bobcats' offense as he scored nine of Texas State's final 18 points to assist in the win tonight. The victory gave Texas State a split with San Jose State for the season.
Chris Cunningham was the Spartans top scorer with 17 points and seven rebounds. Also scoring in double figures for San Jose State were David Andoh (15) and LaVanne Pennington (12).
Texas State's next stop will be Las Vegas, Nevada as it gets ready to compete in the Western Athletic Conference Basketball Tournament. The men's tournament will begin on Tuesday, March 12 at the Orleans Arena. The Bobcats will play Seattle at 8 p.m. CT to kick off the tournament.
