CORVALLIS, Ore. – Texas State struggled in the early going against No. 4 Oregon State Friday night, and the Bobcats couldn't find their footing the rest of the way. The Beavers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning on their way to a 16-4 victory over Texas State.
Catcher
Tyler Pearson led the Bobcats offensively with a 2-for-3 performance, scoring a run.
Kevin Sah and
Nick Smelser added an RBI each on 1-for-4 nights while
Garrett Mattlage was the only other Bobcat to join Pearson with multiple hits (2-for-4).
J.D. Stinnett was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.
Kyle Finnegan started for the Bobcats and went five innings. He gave up 10 hits, nine runs and four walks while striking out three in 29 batters faced.

Andrew Boes and
Steven Keenum all pitched in relief. The trio combined to allow six hits, seven runs, four walks and two strikeouts, both of which came from Keenum. The Bobcats finished with eight hits to 16 for the Beavers.
Mattlage bunted for a single in the top of the first for Texas State's only hit in the first four innings. In the bottom of the first, after the leadoff hitter grounded out, the Beavers laid down consecutive singles. Then the Oregon State designated hitter, Danny Hayes, belted a two-out home run, the team's fifth of the season and first that didn't come from Michael Conforto.
In the fourth, the Beavers used a combination of mostly walks and singles to add six more runs. In the sixth and seventh, Oregon State scored a combined seven runs.
Texas State's scoring was in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Pearson doubled to lead off the fifth and came in on a Smelser double later in the inning. In the sixth, Mattlage doubled to left center and moved to third on an
Andrew Stumph single. The speedy shortstop scored on a wild pitch.
Morgan Mickan and Stinnett scored for the Bobcats in the seventh. The Beavers walked Mickan and he moved to second on a Stinnett single. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch, and Mickan scored on a Sah single. Stinnett scored on the same play when the second baseman committed a throwing error trying to push it to first in time to catch Sah.
Texas State will continue the series against No. 4 Oregon State at 4:05 p.m. Saturday with sophomore pitcher
Taylor Black on the mound. The last game of the weekend is at 3:05 p.m. Sunday. The Bobcats will follow up with two games against No. 11 Oregon at 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday (all times Central Standard Time).
