Texas State Sunk by Islanders

Box Score

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State had a tough opening to the weekend series against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Friday night. With a pitching staff that was playing its sixth game in the course of a week, the Bobcats fell, 23-7, to the Islanders.

Second baseman Colby Targun was a bright spot for the Bobcats with a 3-for-3 night with two RBI and a run scored. Brooks Orton also picked up two RBI on a 1-for-2 night. Garrett Mattlage, Cody Lovejoy and Ben McElroy each had a hit, an RBI and a run scored on the night.

Pitcher Taylor Black picked up the loss for the Bobcats but struck out four in the process. Steven Keenum, Covey Morrow and Donnie Hart each struck one batter out.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi jumped on the Bobcats early with five first-inning runs, two of which were earned, on four hits. After a Texas State three and out, the Islanders put up four more runs in the second for an early 9-0 lead.

Targun put the first hit on the board for the Bobcats with a bunt down the third base line, but the Bobcats could not move him around for the run. Instead, Texas State scored in the third inning after holding the Islanders without a run in the top of the third, the only frame Texas A&M-Corpus Christi didn't score.

Cody Perkins went to first after being hit and took second on a wild pitch. On a groundout, Perkins went to third, and scored on a single to right from Mattlage for TXST's only run of the inning and the game to that point.

The Islanders did not give Texas State time to revel in the run as TAMUCC put up four more in the fourth. Two walks and two singles led to two runs, one of which came on a wild pitch with bases loaded to push the lead to 11-1 in favor of the Islanders. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi added two more unearned runs in the inning to go up, 13-1.

Texas State woke up in the fourth inning and started with three consecutive hits, leading to two runs, before TAMUCC could register an out. But McElroy and Targun's runs would be all the Bobcats scored in the inning as the Islanders ended it with a double play.

After four more TAMUCC runs in the fifth, the Bobcats answered with three runs on two walks and a single. Mattlage, Morgan Mickan and Lovejoy scored the runs with Targun and McElroy picking up the RBI.

A combined six more Islander runs in the sixth and seventh and one TXST run in the bottom of the seventh led to the 23-7 final score.

The Bobcats and Islanders will be back at it Saturday at 2 p.m. with pitchers Scott Grist and Islander lefty Trevor Belicek on the mound. The final game of the weekend will be at 12 p.m. Sunday.
