Hammond, La. –
The Texas State baseball team fell behind early and was unable to recover as Southeastern Louisiana won the first game of a three-game set, 10-1, on Friday night at Alumni Field in Hammond, La. The Lions would never trail as they scored three runs in the first inning and ran away with the nine-run win.

Walks doomed the Bobcats as the team walked seven batters for the game, four of which came around to score for the Lions.

Texas State's only offense on the evening would come from senior Tyler Sibley who hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot in the sixth inning that made the score 6-1 at the time. The homer was the 18th of his career, moving him into a tie for 11th place in career homers in the Texas State record books.

Also notable from Friday's contest was Jeff McVaney's first inning single that extended the senior's hitting streak to 17 consecutive games.

Texas State starter Travis Ballew lost for just the third time this season after allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits with five walks over 4 1/3 innings on the mound. The junior dropped to 6-3 this season after striking out six on the night.

Ross Goebel and Covey Morrow combined to pitch the final 3 2/3 innings for Texas State.

Southeastern Louisiana starter Andro Cutura improved to 4-1 this season after throwing his first career complete game while allowing one run. He struck out just three on the night but was able to limit the Bobcats to five hits.

The Lions finished the game with 10 runs on 11 hits at the plate.

Texas State dropped to 20-13 overall and 8-8 in the Southland Conference, while Southeastern Louisiana improved to 23-11 overall and 9-7 in the conference.

Texas State and Southeastern Louisiana will play the second game of their three-game series on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Alumni Field. The Bobcats will send junior Colton Turner (3-1, 1.36) to the hill to make his eighth start of the season.
