Huntsville, Texas – Texas State made it through a four-hour rain delay to blank Northwestern State 8-0 in six innings to come away with its first win of the Southland Conference Tournament.
Chandler Hall struck out five batters in the complete-game shutout to earn her 14th win of the season.
“I felt that we were in the zone tonight,” said Hall. “We were able to stay focus and everyone was working really hard tonight and staying in the game. I think overall we did a great job.
Texas State managed to score one run in each of the first four innings, and then tacked on four in the sixth to close out the game early.
Lindsay Matt was an instrumental factor in the Bobcats victory as she scored three of Texas State's seven runs, including the first two. Jenna Emery scored on an RBI double by Anna Hernandez in the third and pinch runner Coralee Ramirez raced home on a single by Hall.
The sixth inning proved to be the icing on the cake for Texas State. Matt scored the first run of the inning off a single by Haley Lemons. Hall and Lemons brought the Bobcats to within one run of ending the game, and then McKenzie Baack scored the final run of the game when the Lady Demons failed to make the play at the plate.
Matt finished the game 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Emery was 3-for-4 with one run scored, and the Bobcats outscored the Lady Demons 12 to 3 to take the victory and move on in the winners' bracket. Northwestern State committed five errors in the game that proved costly for the Lady Demons.
“I think that this was a case of us being ready to play Northwestern State after having played them last weekend, said head coach Ricci Woodard. “We did some things well and were able to pick up some pitches that we were looking for. We came out ready to play. I think experience had something to do with the game. He's (NSU head coach Donald Pickett) got a bunch of young kids playing in the conference tournament for the first time, but I think the errors definitely hurt them in the ball game as well. We came out ready to go and a few errors early cost them the ball game.”
