Austin, Texas –
More than 6,000 fans were on hand at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Tuesday evening as the Bobcats fell to No. 4 Texas, 2-0, after five Longhorn pitchers combined to shut out Texas State for the first time this season. Pitching was on full display for both teams all night as the two teams combined for just two runs and 12 hits for the game.

Texas State starter Travis Ballew threw five scoreless innings in his fourth start of the season, limiting the Longhorns to just three hits while tying his career high for strikeouts with five. The sophomore lowered his ERA to 4.02 after leaving the game with a 0-0 score in the sixth.

Longhorn pitchers were equally as impressive as they combined to hold the Bobcats to just four hits and no walks. Bobcat hitters reached second base just twice in the game.

The Bobcats dropped to 25-15 overall with the loss, while the Longhorns improved to 31-10 this season.

Lee Colon (1-4) suffered his fourth loss of the season after allowing one run in one-third of an inning on the mound. Kendal Carrillo (4-0) pitched 1 1/3 innings in relief for Texas to earn the win, while closer Corey Knebel tallied his 13th save of the season.

Offensively, Tyler Sibley led the team with a 2-for-3 day at the plate, upping his batting average to .383 for the season. Bret Atwood (1-for-2) and Cody Perkins (1-for-3) recorded the other two hits for the Bobcats.

Both starting pitchers had their way early with the opposing offense as the score was knotted at 0-0 through three innings. Ballew did not allow a hit until the eighth batter he faced, and Texas starter Sam Stafford allowed just two Bobcat hits in his three innings on the mound.

After Ballew faced the minimum in the fourth, the Longhorns put the first two runners on base to begin the bottom of the fifth inning. However, an attempted sacrifice bunt turned into a double play ball as Kyle Kubitza charged on the play and cut down the lead runner at third before Isaac Nuti threw to first for the second out. Ballew then recorded his fifth strikeout of the game, tying his career high, to get out of the inning and keep the game scoreless.

Bret Atwood led off the top of the sixth inning with a single through the right side before advancing to second base on a sacrifice bunt, but that is as far as he would get after the Longhorns were able to induce a pair of groundouts to escape the inning.

Texas broke the 0-0 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning after the Bobcats went to the bullpen to start the inning. A leadoff single from Tant Shepherd was followed by a triple to bring home the first run of the game. Mitchell Pitts then came in the game out of the bullpen with one out and a runner on third and sat down the two Longhorns he faced to keep the deficit at 1-0.

The Bobcat bullpen held the Longhorns in check until the home team pushed across one more run in the bottom of the eighth inning for a 2-0 lead.

Facing UT's closer in the top of the ninth, Texas State was unable to put together a comeback as Texas closed out the two-run win with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

The Bobcats will return to the field on Wednesday evening when the team hosts Prairie View A&M at Bobcat Ballpark at 6:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the gates, which open at 5:00 p.m.
