Corpus Christi, Texas – Behind the third consecutive career-high strikeout performance from a Texas State starting pitcher and an offense that scored double-digits for the fourth time in five games, the Bobcat baseball team won 14-1 in the run-rule shortened game on Sunday afternoon at Whataburger Field to sweep the weekend series against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Texas State won its seventh consecutive game to improve to 9-2 overall and take an early lead in the Southland Conference standings with a 3-0 record. After beginning the season with an 8-2 record, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi dropped to 8-5 overall and 0-3 in the conference following three losses to the Bobcats.
Bobcat starter Colton Turner was outstanding from the beginning of the game, striking out the side in the first en route to recording a career-high nine strikeouts for the game. It was the third straight game that a Texas State starter at least tied his career high for strikeouts. Carson Smith finished with 10 punch outs on Friday to tie his career high, while Mitchell Pitts fanned a career-best nine on Saturday.
Turner's final line was 5 1/3 innings on the mound with nine strikeouts, three walks and six hits allowed. The sophomore allowed just one earned run as he earned the win, lowering his season ERA to 3.38 as he improved to 3-0 to begin 2011.
Brett Carnline (1-1) was charged with the loss for the Islanders after giving up five runs in two innings on the mound.
Five Bobcats had at least two hits on Sunday, led by Tyler Sibley's 3-for-5 performance. The Texas State leadoff hitter had two singles and a double with a pair of runs scored.
Bret Atwood reached base four times as he went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and four runs scored. Atwood is now 7-for-7 in his last seven at-bats going back to Saturday's game.
Kyle Kubitza finished 2-for-3 with a walk, four runs scored and two RBIs, and Casey Kalenkosky was 1-for-2 with a walk, two runs scored and two RBIs. Jeff McVaney finished 2-for-4 with a game-high four RBIs.
The Bobcats had 23 batters reach base as the team recorded 13 hits and eight walks with two batters being hit by pitches.
After scoring two in the first inning and three in the second, the Bobcats broke open the game in the fourth inning with five runs to take a 10-0 lead. Texas State added one in the fifth and three in the seventh as the team won by run rule for the second time this season.
Texas State will return to San Marcos for its next game on Tuesday, March 8 when Baylor visits Bobcat Ballpark for a 6:30 p.m. game. Tickets for the game can be purchased on the day of the game or in advance through the Texas State Athletic Ticket Office.
