San Marcos, Texas – In a meeting between the 2010 Southland Conference regular season and tournament champions, the Texas State Bobcats and Lamar Cardinals will play a three-game series in Beaumont this weekend. Game one of the series will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Friday at Vincent-Beck Stadium before the teams play at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday and 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
The Bobcats (15-5) enter the weekend tied with Stephen F. Austin for first place in the Southland Conference with a perfect 6-0 record. Lamar (16-8) sits in third place with a 5-1 mark after sweeping Nicholls and winning two-of-three against Central Arkansas.
The all-time series between the two schools is in favor of Lamar, which has won 37 of the 62 meetings. Of late, the Bobcats have out-performed the Cardinals, winning seven of the last eight games.
Friday night's game will feature a pair of the top starting pitchers in the Southland Conference when Carson Smith takes the mound for the Bobcats against Blake Ford. Smith is 2-1 with a 2.25 ERA to go along with 34 strikeouts in just 28 innings on the mound. Ford is 3-1 with a 1.62 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 33 1/3 innings of work.
Mitchell Pitts (3-0, 5.16 ERA) will get the ball for Texas State on Saturday, and Colton Turner (4-0, 3.71) will take the mound on Sunday.
Jonathan Dziedzic (1-1, 4.55) gets the start for Lamar on Saturday, while Jeff Abt (0-0, 5.40) will make his first start of the season on Sunday.
