SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State track and field had two athletes on the women's side – Lara Roberts and Charlize Goody – earn first-place finishes in their events on day one of the Sun Belt Track and Field Outdoor Championships.
Roberts was the first athlete at the meet to earn a podium finish when she recorded a mark of 68.84m in the women's hammer throw to secure her gold medal. Roberts won the event by over eight meters and was the only athlete in the competition to record a throw over 60 meters.
Texas State has now won four consecutive gold medals in the women's hammer throw at the SBC Outdoor Championship meet.
The second gold medal of the day came from Goody in the women's javelin. She recorded a PR mark of 51.09m and was the only athlete in the field to mark a throw over 50 meters.
Her teammates Hannah Kemele and McKenah Sears placed fourth and sixth in the event, with marks of 43.45m and 41.93m.
In the men's javelin, Connor Warzecha placed second overall with a throw of 63.58m and earned the men's team eight points.
Also scoring points for the men's team in throwing events were Edward Ta'amilo and Manfred Mannamaa, who placed fifth and sixth overall in the men's hammer throw. Ta'amilo recorded a PR throw of 59.35m and Mannamaa marked a 58.96m.
The last pair of Bobcats to earn points in field events on the first day of the competition were pole vaulters Breanna Brandes and Matilde Poli. Both athletes recorded PR marks of 3.81m and placed seventh and eighth, respectively.
In the final of the women's and men's 10,000m, which capped off day one of the meet, Nyomi Garcia and Henok Hagos both scored points for their respective teams. Garcia recorded the third-fastest time in TXST history for the women's 10,000m (36:16.62) and placed eighth overall, while Hagos placed sixth with a PB of 30:30.06, the eighth-best time in TXST history.
In the prelims of the day one running events, six Bobcats – Abigail Parra (women's 1500m), Alexia Tiscareno Macias (women's 1500m), Mihajlo Katanic (400m hurdles), Drew Donley (200m) and David Mendez-Serrato (men's 1500m) – qualified for the finals in their respective events and will compete in the finals on Saturday.
Day two of the SBC Outdoor Track and Field Championships begins at 9:30 a.m. CT on Friday.
