HARRISONBURG, Va. – For the first time in program history, the Texas State track and field program swept the Sun Belt Track and Field Outdoor Championships, winning both the men's and women's titles.
The men's team scored 145 to secure the title, while the women's scored 119 points to earn their second consecutive SBC Outdoor Championship.
"I am happy to see the hard work from my coaches, staff and athletes pay off with a men's and women's championship," said Texas State Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Frazier. "It was a fierce battle to the end and we came out on top."
The final day of the SBC Championships saw three Bobcats – Abigail Parra, Drew Donley and Aiden Hayes – earn first-place finishes in their events, and seven athletes – Shedrack Akpeki, Charlize Goody, Danie Strooh, Mihajlo Katanic, Kason O'Riley, Chris Preddie and Daniel Harrold – place inside the top three of their respective events.
Parra, who was named the women's top meet scorer after she totaled 23 points throughout three events, found the podium in the 800m and 1500m and placed fourth in the 5000m on the last day of the conference meet.
In the 1500m, Parra recorded the second-best time in TXST history (4:23.76) and placed first overall and doubled back in the 800m to record a time of 2:08.58 and place third overall, recording the third-best time in TXST history. To end her dominant day on the track, she recorded the third-best time in TXST history in the 5000m (17:08.63) and placed fourth overall.
Donley had an impressive day on the track, placing top three in two events on the final day of competition. He won the 200m with a time of 20.75 and placed third in the 100m with a mark of 10.28.
Akpeki placed second in the 100m for the Bobcats and recorded a season-best time of 10.27, which is tied for the eighth-fastest mark in TXST history.
In the high jump, both Aiden Hayes and Kason O'Riley had historic days in the event. The pair were the last two jumpers left in the event and both ended with marks of 2.25/7-4.5, which tied the meet record and SBC record that was set in 1994. Hayes placed first overall, while O'Riley placed second due to having more missed jumps throughout the entirety of the event.
Staying in the jumps, Preddie found the podium for the second time this meet when he placed third in the triple jump and recorded a mark of 15.30m.
In the men's and women's discus, newcomers Goody and Strooh both found the podium in their SBC discus debuts. On the women's side, Goody placed second with a mark of 46.98m, and on the men's side, Strooh placed third and marked a 52.72m.
Back on the track, Harrold recorded a season-best time of 13.58 in the 110m hurdles to earn a second-place finish in his last SBC Championship appearance, while freshman Mihajlo Katanic placed third in the 400m hurdles and recorded the third-best time in TXST history.
