BEAUMONT, Texas – The Texas State women's golf team topped the field at the Cardinal Challenge to win its second tournament of the 2024-25 season, while
Yvonne Chamness earned individual medalist honors for the first time this year.
The Bobcats won the event with a 31-stroke advantage finishing 18-over 882 across 54 holes. Midwestern State finished second (+48) and host Lamar third (+59).
"I'm super proud of the whole team for winning," head coach
Par Nilsson said. "Overall it was a solid tournament for everyone."
Having previously earned a pair of runner-up finishes this season, Chamness turned in her first-career win after opening with rounds of even par through 36 holes and closing the event out at +2 on the final 18. Chamness has now led the Bobcats in six of nine tournaments this season. She also has a team best 13 rounds even or under par.
"I'm especially proud of Yvonne for winning her first college golf tournament," Nilsson continued. "It's never easy to win, and the first one is always the most difficult. It was a great event for her and she played super solid the whole tournament."
Freshman
Miren Ontanon (69-75-76--220) finished two strokes back to secure runner-up honors at 4-over 220. Her previous best finish was seventh at her first career tournament, the Texas State Invitational.
"Miren was also very impressive for us," Nilsson noted. "Her second-place finish really shows how much she can contribute and her first-round 69 was a great round."
Mattingly Palmer (75-76-72--223) and
Ella Salama (71-78-75--224) also found themselves in the top five after three rounds, with Palmer finishing tied for third at +7 and Salama fifth at +8.
Carla Bourdeaux (76-75-77--228) rounded out the TXST lineup finishing tied for eighth at +14.
The Bobcats have one final tournament of the regular season before the Sun Belt Championships take place Apil 14-17 in Point Clear, Alabama. TXST will travel to College Station for The "Mo" Morial April 7-8.
