SAN MARCOS, Texas – Joining the Texas State men's basketball team in its 2025 signing class is Kyren "Ky" Pernell, announced by head coach Terrence Johnson on Thursday.
"In addition to being a high-character young man on and off the floor, Ky brings elite playmaking to our roster. His size, skill and IQ gives us a three-level scorer with a point guard feel," said Johnson. "Ky is a two-way player that will embrace the challenge of competing on the defensive end. We couldn't be more excited to add Ky and his twin brother Kylen to our team."
Pernell is a 6-foot, 3-inch guard from Moorhead, Mississippi. He is in his second year playing at Jones College and averaging 14.7 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game this year while knocking down 43.2% of his three-point attempts.
Last season, Pernell was a first team NJCAA All-Region 23 and All-MACCC selection and earned Region 23 Tournament MVP honors after averaging 17.2 ppg, 4.8 rpg and 2.3 apg. He scored in double figures in all 33 games and had 10 contests of at least 20 points.
Pernell graduated from Horn Lake High School. His senior year saw him help the Eagles go 30-2, win the district championship and advance to the 6A semifinals. He was a two-time 6A all-state and all-district selection, scored over 900 points in his career and participated in the Alabama/Mississippi All-Star Game.
