LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas State shortstop
Davis Powell has been named to the Brooks Wallace Award watch list, as announced by the College Baseball Foundation on Tuesday.
Â
The award honors the nation's top shortstop and will be presented by the College Baseball Foundation later this year. It's named after former Texas Tech shortstop Brooks Wallace, who played for the Red Raiders from 1977 to 1980 and died of leukemia at the age of 27.
Â
In 29 games, Powell leads the Bobcats with a .381 batting average, 43 hits, 32 runs scored and 14 doubles. He has also added four home runs and recorded 26 RBI while posting a .467 on-base percentage.
Â
The Lufkin, Texas native is one of six Sun Belt Conference players named to the watch list that is made up of a total of 101 shortstops across the nation. Joining him from the league is Alex Bouche (Old Dominion), Dustin Dickerson (Southern Miss), Blake Evans (Georgia Southern), Matt Ruiz (Georgia State) and John Taylor (Louisiana).
Â
Powell makes it two straight seasons that a Texas State player has been on the watch list after
Dalton Shuffield was recognized last year.
