BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Mathilde Canet won her first Sun Belt individual championship,
Sedrickia Wynn advanced to the finals in three events, and the men's sprinters took several spots in multiple finals as Texas State track and field opened the 2023 Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships on Monday.

Canet became the first Bobcat athlete to win the women's pentathlon since Asiya Iskakova in 2009 after totaling a school-record 3,914 points. Canet won the high jump and long jump, placed second in the 800 meters, and third in 60 meter hurdles to help total more than 100 points than second-place Safiya John from Southern Miss. Canet was near her PRs in all five events.

She also became the third Bobcat all-time to win the women's pentathlon.

Wynn, meanwhile, finished first in the 60 meter prelims and second in both the 60 meter hurdles and 200 meters to qualify for the finals in each event on Tuesday.

The men's sprinters placed four in the 60 meter finals, three in the 200 meter and two in the 400 meter to position itself for point-scoring opportunities on Tuesday.
Daniel Harrold also qualified for the finals in the men's 60 meter hurdles after posting the best time in the prelims (7.78).

The men's side picked up points in the weight throw, long jump and pole vault.
Tyler Noles had a personal-best toss in the weight throw, recording a mark of 18.21 meters/59-9 to finish fourth. In the long jump,
Chris Preddie finished runner-up with a leap of 7.43 meters/24-4.5 while
Drue Jackson also charted points with a seventh-place finish (6.99 meters/22-11.25).
Simon Thor and
Tye Eaton, meanwhile, placed third and fourth in the pole vault, respectively.

The Texas State men's team finished day one in fourth in the team standings with 28 points.

The women's side was sixth with 17 points. In addition to Canet, it scored with a sixth-place finish by freshman
Elisabet Runarsdottir and an eighth-place finish by freshman
Utitofon Sam in the women's weigh throw.
Luize Opola placed seventh in the pentathlon.

The final day of the conference indoor championships gets started at 10 am on Tuesday with the men's heptathlon.
