Soccer Signs Two for 2024 Class

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State soccer head coach Steve Holeman announced the signing of two high school seniors in the initial signing period for the Class of 2024. Joining the Bobcats next Fall will be Sydney Bassa and Elizabeth Edomwonyi.

Sydney Bassa
Midfielder/Forward | Lumberton, Texas | Lumberton HS | Challenge SC
Bassa is finishing up her senior year at Lumberton High School. In her only year of playing for the Raiders, she scored 48 goals and recorded 42 assists. Her performance earned her 2022 TASCO All-State First Team, District 21-4A Offensive MVP and the Beaumont Enterprise Super Gold Team Player of the Year.

The future Bobcat competed in the Olympic Development Program where her team was the 2020 national champions. She also took part in United Stats Youth National Team training camps in 2018 and 2019.

Bassa plays for Challenge SC where she has been coached by Pat O'Toole. She will be the second in her family to compete at the collegiate level on the pitch as her sister Isabel played for Lamar in the 2021 and 2022 seasons.

"Over the last eight years, I have had the pleasure of watching Sydney Bassa develop on and off the field as one of her coaches at Challenge Soccer club. She is an outstanding player and an even better person who has shown incredible commitment and dedication. Steve and the Texas State coaches will love her creative attacking play and her passion for the game and her team. I am confident Sydney will do well at Texas State and the fans will lover her hard work and commitment to the team." – Pat O'Toole, Executive Director, Challenge SC

Holeman on Bassa: "Sydney Bassa is a fantastic player, and we are very excited she has decided to join us at Texas State. She has an incredible work ethic and is always looking to take her game to another level. She is creative, technical and has a knack for scoring goals. Sydney is a very good target forward who makes those around her better. She will be a great addition to this group both on and off the field wit her outgoing and positive personality."

Elizabeth Edomwonyi
Forward | Stockholm, Sweden | Huddinge HS | Mälarhöjden-Hägersten FF
Edomwonyi will become the first Swedish player in program history when she arrives in San Marcos. The 5-foot, 10-inch forward graduates this Spring from Huddinge High School in Stockholm, Sweeden.

She currently plays for Mälarhöjden-Hägersten FF where this past season she scored 10 goals and recorded three assists in 13 matches. That came after netting 14 goals and being credited with three assists and posting a 12-goal, 4-assist campaign in 2022 and 2021, respectively.

"Elizabeth is an extremely talented forward who strikes the ball well with both feet. She is very sharp inside the penalty area and often scores from close range. She is very strong on the ball and has the ability to hold the ball up. Elizabeth is also very fast and good at beating players 1v1. In addition, she is very coachable and always looking to take her game to the next level. Elizabeth is a great teammate, and we wish her the best with Texas State!" – Robert Stenman, Head Coach, Mälarhöjden-Hägersten FF

Holeman on Edomwonyi: "The addition of Elizabeth gives us another dangerous player in our attack. She has pace and is dynamic when running at players. She is good with both feet which makes her tough to defend. The great news about her talent is that her best is still to come as she consistently works to improve her game. Looking forward to getting her on campus as she will be a great representative of Texas State."
