Top Quotes | Volleyball Media Availability – August 10

SAN MARCOS, TX — Texas State volleyball head coach Sean Huiet, setter Emily DeWalt and outside hitter Janell Fitzgerald all met with the media on Wednesday, August 10 as the program conducted its second day of preseason camp in preparation for the 2022 regular season.

Check out the top quotes from their media availabilities.

Head Coach Sean Huiet

(On what's sticking out through two days of preseason camp)

"One of the things I love about our program is that we are a championship program. And finishing second (in the conference) and finishing in the top 50 (RPI rankings) is a pretty successful season, but it wasn't good enough for (these student-athletes). So, what they've done (from the end of last season) to the start of (preseason camp), you can see a lot of growth and a lot of determination to get back and win the Sun Belt and get back to the NCAA Tournament. It's been a good couple of days."

(On where the team stacks up in the Sun Belt)

"In the Sun Belt, we know we are going to get everyone's best every night. I think there's going to be a big jump by bringing Troy, South Alabama over to our division. We get to play them twice. Louisiana is going to be good this year. And we are going to see four teams we have never seen before — at some point in the season — so I think the Sun Belt, as a whole, has really made a jump in where we want to go. We talk a lot about getting two teams in the NCAA Tournament. I like our odds and where we are at, but we just have to be prepared for everyone because it's going to be a dog fight."

(On the upperclassmen)

"They all bring leadership and have for a long time. We joke a little bit about their bodies and being grandmas, so we'll manage the wear and tear. But they've done this, and they've done it for four seasons now. They know our expectations and our program's expectations. They're really, really good with the young kids. We've talked a lot about that and their COVID year and you just can't say no to them and these types of kids. But there is a big age difference with those newcomers, so watching them mess has been really fun."

S Emily DeWalt

(On what factored into the decision to return)

"I just wasn't done. I wasn't ready to give up the game yet. I think, also, not getting a ring last year had a lot to do with it as well. So, being able to come back and leave on — hopefully — a better note was a no-brainer.

(On chasing the Texas State career assists record and the preparation to achieve that)

"For me, the number doesn't really mean much. Being competitive people like we are, we just try to go out there and play to win and everything else just comes with it."

(On her health coming into the season)

"I feel really good, really prepared. I think my doctor and physical therapist did a really good job of getting me back to where I am 100 percent for this season."

OH Janell Fitzgerald

(On what factored into the decision to return)

"Like Emily said, we aren't done yet. We have so many goals that we haven't completed just yet. So, I think we have expectations for ourselves. I remember when we all came in that we wanted four (conference championships), like that would be amazing."

(On chasing the Texas State career kills record and the preparation to achieve that)

"For me, I've worked on being smarted with my game instead of just using more power. We know we have the size and the power as a team but being smart is such a big aspect."

(On the five newcomers currently on campus)

"I think they all blend, chemistry wise, very well. They're able to catch onto what we are saying as well as know they're able to come to us with any questions."
