SAN MARCOS, Texas – After leading the Texas State baseball program to a record-breaking season, head coach
Steven Trout has signed a five-year contract extension through June 2027, Director of Athletics
Don Coryell announced Wednesday.
Â
"I couldn't be more excited to continue to be the head coach for Texas State baseball. After the record breaking season, I am excited to carry this momentum into the seasons to come," said Trout. "I want to thank
Don Coryell,
Bryan Dean, and all of the administration for believing in me. I also want to thank my staff for all their hard work and time they put into our program to make it what it is."
Â
"Lastly, I want to thank our amazing players for all they have done for Texas State. They are the ones that win the games and give everything they have to this program. I can't wait to see the stands packed in the Spring and to see Slam Marcos in full effect!"
Â
The 2022 season saw Trout guide the Bobcats to program records in wins (47), conference victories (26) and winning percentage (.770) as well as their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 11 years. Texas State also claimed its second Sun Belt Conference regular season title in the past three full seasons.
Â
"Not only did Coach Trout engineer the best year-to-year turnaround in NCAA history this season, but he did it with exemplary leadership and represented all of Texas State with class," said Coryell. "The team never wavered throughout the season, and it is no surprise under Coach Trout's guidance that they achieved a Sun Belt Conference championship, had the best record in program history, and made a statement on the national stage in the NCAA Regionals. We are excited that he and his family have chosen to stay in San Marcos, and I truly believe he is only getting started in terms of what Texas State baseball can accomplish in the years to come."
Â
Trout and the Bobcats earned the program's first NCAA Regional at-large selection in 2022, placing as the No. 2 seed in the Stanford Regional. Texas State, making its sixth NCAA tournament appearance overall, also reached its first-ever regional final after defeating UC Santa Barbara, 7-3, and upsetting No. 2 national seed Stanford, 5-2.
Â
During the record setting season, the Bobcats became the first team in Sun Belt history to go 15-0 in conference road games. Four times the team posted a winning streak of six or more contests, including 11 straight from May 3-27. That streak matched the second-longest in program history.
Â
A program record seven Bobcats earned All-Sun Belt honors with five being named to the first team in 2022, including
Dalton Shuffield becoming the first Texas State player to be named the Sun Belt's Player of the Year. Two Bobcats have also earned All-America honors so far:
Tristan Stivors (Collegiate Baseball & NCBWA) and Shuffield (Collegiate Baseball).
Â
Trout, the 2022 Ron Maestri Sun Belt Coach of the Year, led Texas State to victories over the No. 1 and No. 2 ranked teams in the country this season, both coming on the road, for the first time in program history. This season also saw a 26-win improvement from 2021, which is one of the largest turnarounds in NCAA history.
Â
In his first three years at Texas State, Trout has a record of 82-54 (.603) and ranks first in winning percentage for Bobcat coaches. He has posted 11 wins over Power 5 programs with a season record eight claimed in 2022. This season also saw five victories coming against ranked teams.
