#17 Bobcats Welcome Cardinals to Town

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The homestand for 17th-ranked Texas State (34-11) wraps up on Tuesday as Incarnate Word (16-24) comes to town. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Bobcat Ballpark.
 
The game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Brant Freeman and Ty Harrington on the call. Fans can also catch the game on KTSW 89.9 FM and live stats will also be available.

For the eighth consecutive week, Texas State is ranked in at least five of the major polls. The Bobcats are 15th in Collegiate Baseball, 17th in D1Baseball, 18th in Baseball America, 20th in NCBWA and 22nd in USA Today polls.
 
ABOUT TEXAS STATE
Entering the game on a 10-game hitting streak is Dalton Shuffield. The shortstop is batting .545 with 20 runs, 12 RBI, five doubles, three home runs and two triples during the streak. For the season, he leads the team with a .407 average, 70 hits, 60 runs, 15 doubles, 12 stolen bases and five triples. His 40 RBI and 10 homers are second behind Jose Gonzalez (41) and John Wuthrich (12), respectively.
 
Justin Thompson comes in batting .349 with 60 hits, 43 runs, 36 RBI and eight doubles and home runs. Also hitting over .300 is Ben McClain (.303) and Isaiah Ortega-Jones (.308). Both Daylan Pena and Wuthrich have driven in 38 runs.
 
The starter for Tuesday is still to be announced.
 
Tristan Stivors continues to pace the Sun Belt Conference with nine saves. The senior right-hander is 6-1 with a 2.70 ERA and 51 strikeouts. Making a team-high 22 appearances has been Triston Dixon, who is 7-0 with a .222 ERA and 47 strikeouts in 48.2 innings. Also coming out of the bullpen 20 times is Matthew Nicholas, who is 1-1 and sporting a 2.57 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 14 frames.
 
ABOUT INCARNATE WORD
Incarnate Word enters on a six-game losing streak with four of the losses being by a run. This past weekend saw the Cardinals fall on the road at Houston Baptist. In midweek games, UIW is 4-6 and have dropped its past four. The road has not been kind to the Cardinals as they are 2-17 with their only wins being over Houston (Mar. 5) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Mar. 27).
 
Roberto Gonzalez leads the team with a .329 batting average, 54 hits, 29 RBI and three triples. Only other player hitting over .300 is Nixon Brannan at .306. Grant Smith comes in with a team-high 32 runs, 12 doubles and six homers while plating 26 runs. Also with 20 or more RBI are Alec Carr (20), Ridge Rogers (21) and Hernan Yanez (21).

Chandler Davis has earned five saves while posting a 2-1 record, 5.09 ERA and 39 strikeouts in 35.1 innings. Steve Hayward's 19 appearances are the most on the squad. The right-hander sports a 1-4 record, 2.84 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 31.2 innings. Also with a sub-3.00 ERA is Larry Westall (2.81), who is 1-0 with 11 strikeouts in 16 frames.
 
SERIES VS. CARDINALS
Texas State leads the all-time series 25-11 but UIW has won the last two meetings, both of which took place in San Antonio. Last win for the Bobcats was a 7-4 contest in San Marcos on Mar. 6 2019. TXST is 19-6 all-time when hosting the Cardinals and have won the last eight games in town.
