MOBILE, Ala. – The Texas State men's and women's track and field teams won five events and set a new meet record at the 2021 Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Championships May 13-15 in the Jaguar Track and Field Complex.
Junior
Kwanele Mthembu was Texas State's first individual champion on Thursday night when he led the men's 10,000-meter race wire-to-wire with a Sun Belt Championships in a record time 28:48.33.
Kattiana Ealy-Pulido became Texas State's second individual champion when she won the women's 100-meter hurdles with a wind-aided time of 13.33 seconds on Saturday.
Jaylen Allen captured a gold medal in a highly contested men's 400-meter race with a career-best time of 46.44 seconds.
Pedro Osorio Lopez overtook Arkansas State's Seth Waters in the final 150 meters to win the men's 800-meter race in 1:51.12.
Texas State earned its fifth title in the final race at the Championship when the Bobcats won the men's 4x400-meter relay.
Kobe Daniels, Allen, Osorio Lopez, and
Taahir Kelly combined for a winning time of 3:08.19.
The Bobcats finished third in the men's team standings with 123 points, while Texas State was fourth in the women's standings with 90.50 points.
Texas State scored 18 points with three third-place finishes in the women's 800, 1,500, and 5,000-meter races.
Breanna Clark had a career-best time of 2:13.77 in the 800 meters, and
Lee-Anne Blake had a pair of career-best efforts with times of 4:29.07 in the women's 1,500 meters and 17:12.73 in the 5,000-meters.
The Bobcats also netted 14 points in the women's 100 and 400 meters.
Sadi Giles had a career-best time of 11.68 seconds to finish third.
Anayah Washington was sixth in 11.79 seconds, and
Shelby Smith placed eighth in 11.84 seconds.
Chermariea Hardy added four points when she completed the 400-meter race in 55.15 seconds.
The women's team scored 30 points in the two hurdles events. In addition to winning the 100-meter hurdles,
Kattiana Ealy-Pulido placed second in the 400-meter hurdles in a career-best 58.82 seconds.
Ariana Ealy-Pulido, her twin sister, placed third in the 100-meter hurdles in a wind-aided 13.45 seconds after having the fastest preliminary time of 13.50 seconds. She also was fourth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.79.
Sedrickia Wynn scored an additional point with her eighth-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.19 seconds.
The Bobcats were fourth in the women's 4x100-meter relay with a season-best time of 45.39 seconds and finished fifth in women's 4x400-meter (3:44.09) relays.
Luize Opola had a pair of career-best efforts to finish fifth in the women's triple jump and heptathlon. She had a leap of 12.29 meters (40' 4") in the triple jump and scored 5,069 points in the heptathlon. Opala finished just ahead of teammate
Mathilde Canet, who had a career-best of 5,056 points.
Washington, Smith, and
Tina Douglas teamed up for 8.5 points in the long and high jumps. Washington was fourth in the long jump with 6.03 meters (19' 9.50"), while Smith's outdoor-best effort of 5.95 meters (19' 6.25") was the sixth-best long jump. Douglas scored a half-point when she tied for eighth place after clearing 1.67 meters (5' 5.75") in the high jump.
Osorio Lopez was Texas State's scoring leader for the men's team, finishing with 15 points. In addition to winning the 800 meters, he placed fourth in the 1500-meter race (3:50.50).
Justin Botello had a career-best time of 3:54.70 to finish in eighth place in the 1500 meters, while A.J. Tyler was sixth in the 800 meters (1:54.41), and Mthembu finished sixth in the 5,000 meters (14:33.93).
Texas State scored 33 points in the men's sprints. In addition to Allen winning the 400 meters, Daniels finished fourth with a career-best time of 46.80 seconds, while Kelly was sixth in 48.23 seconds.
Bervensky Pierre was the silver medalist in the 100 meters with a career-best time of 10.47 seconds and earned a bronze medal in the 200 meters with a wind-aided time of 20.87 seconds. Allen also finished in eighth place with a wind-aided time of 21.57 seconds in the 200-meter race.
The Bobcats finished fifth in the men's 4x100-meter (40.92 seconds) to score four points.
Texas State added 14 team points in the men's decathlon when
Ben Collerton scored 7,160 points to finish in second place.
Simon Thor placed fourth with 6,299 points, and
Blaine Brokschmidt netted 5,529 points to finish eighth in his first decathlon.
Isaac Sadzewicz tied for third place in the men's pole vault after clearing a season-best 5.01 meters (16' 5.25").
Ronnie Briscoe, Jr. finished in sixth place with a long jump of 7.35 meters (24' 1.50").
Brandon Busby netted 17 points for the men's team with a pair of third-place finishes in the hammer (61.24 meters, 200' 11") and discus (a season-best throw of 53.81 meters, 176' 6"). He also placed fourth in the men's shot put (16.17 meters, 53' 0.75").
James Noles finished fifth in the men's discus with a career-best throw of 50.22 meters (164' 9").
The next competition for the Bobcats is the NCAA West Preliminaries May 26-29 in College Station, Texas. The NCAA will announce the 2021 Division I men's and women's outdoor track and field selections on May 20. There will be 48 athletes competing in each event trying to advance to the NCAA Championships held June 9-12 in Eugene, Oregon.
