Alcala and Callaway Join TXST Soccer Staff

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State Soccer Head Coach Kat Conner announced Wednesday the hiring of new assistant coaches Josh Alcala and Matt Callaway.

"After a nationwide search, the hiring committee was able to identify two elite caliber coaches," said Conner. "Coach Alcala and Coach Callaway bring to Texas State unique playing and coaching backgrounds, and I am confident both coaches will help to develop our players' talents and achieve the team's goals."

Alcala comes to San Marcos after serving as an assistant coach for a year at Illinois College. His duties with the Bobcats will include player development and recruiting.

"I'm absolutely thrilled to join Texas State women's soccer! Partly, it's a homecoming for me and my family but also because it's not often a job comes along where you can learn from the coach who started the program," said Alcala. "I'm incredibly fortunate for this opportunity to work with Coach Kat and am ready to take on the challenge of college soccer in the state of Texas as well as the Sun Belt Conference. Eat 'Em Up Cats!"

Prior to his time in Jacksonville, Illinois, Alcala completed a graduate assistantship at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.

A four-year soccer player at South Carolina, he earned all-conference honors in Conference USA and played in three NCAA Tournaments. After his collegiate career, Alcala played professionally for Crystal Palace FC (Baltimore) and the Austin Aztex in the United Soccer League.

Following his successful professional soccer career, Alcala began his coaching career in the Austin area. In 2017, he became the head coach for the club program Chicago Fire Juniors. Subsequently, he served as an assistant coach at Purdue University-Northwest.

Alcala graduated from South Carolina in 2006 with a bachelor's degree in Media Arts and completed his master's degree in Sport Management in 2020 from Wisconsin-Parkside.

Callaway arrives at Texas State after five years at the University of Wyoming, where he served as a goalkeeper coach. In his first year with the Cowgirls, the goalkeepers tied the program record for most shutouts in a season with eight clean sheets. As an assistant coach for the Bobcats, Callaway will work primarily with the team's goalkeepers, in addition to other coaching duties.

"I'm very excited to join the soccer program at Texas State. I look forward to learning and growing as a person and soccer coach, as well as helping the program continue its history of success," said Callaway.

He arrived in Laramie, Wyoming after a stint as an assistant coach at the University of Sioux Falls. Before joining the USF staff in 2015, he was an assistant coach at East Texas Baptist for both the men's and women's soccer programs.

In 2013, Callaway served as an assistant and youth coach for the Andromeda Soccer Club and was the volunteer assistant men's soccer coach at the University of Dallas. During that time, he was also a staff coach for the North Texas Olympic Development Program.

Callaway became the men's and women's assistant soccer coach at Ottawa (Kan.) University in 2012 after being a graduate assistant for two years. During his time there, he helped both teams achieve winning records. The men's team compiled a 28-25-4 record, including a 19-6-2 conference mark, while the women notched a 13-6-0 overall record and were 7-2-0 in conference play. He also assisted the Kansas Rush soccer club as the Director of Goalkeeping.

Since 2012, Callaway has been a staff member at the No. 1 Goalkeeper Camp. From 2011-13, he was a US Youth Soccer Region II goalkeeper staff member.

While a graduate assistant for Ottawa, he worked as an assistant girls' soccer coach at Lawrence High School in Lawrence, Kansas. There, Callaway served as staff coach as well as being goalkeeper staff for the Kansas Olympic Development Program.

In March 2019, Callaway earned the Advanced National Goalkeeper Diploma from United Soccer Coaches

Callaway, a native of Seagoville, Texas, was a four-year starting goalkeeper for Lyon College in Batesville, Arkansas from 2006-10. He earned all-league honors twice for the Scots. Callaway, who holds a USSF B license, earned his bachelor's degree in Math and French in 2010, before earning his MBA at Ottawa University in 2012.

The Bobcats open the spring portion of their schedule on Sunday, Feb. 14 at home against Houston Baptist at 1 p.m.
