SAN MARCOS, Texas — The Texas State men's basketball program will continue its roadways to open the 2021-22 regular season as the Bobcats travel throughout the Southeast over the weekend with games at LSU and Vanderbilt.
On Friday, Nov. 12, Texas State (1-0) will play at LSU (1-0) at 7 p.m., before traveling to Nashville to play Vanderbilt on Sunday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. Both games will be streamed on SEC Network + / ESPN+.
LOOKING AT THE BOBCATS
In its season-opening game on Tuesday, Nov. 9, the Texas State men's basketball team earned a 75-57 win at Incarnate Word.
Caleb Asberry led the way with 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting, including 3 of 5 from behind the 3-point arc, in 29 minutes of game action.
Shelby Adams (14) and
Drue Drinnon (12) also joined Asberry with double-digit points on the night.
The Bobcats' game at LSU on Friday night will mark the first game against an opponent from the Southeastern Conference (SEC) since traveling to Starkville, Miss., to play Mississippi State on Monday, Nov. 30, 2020. In that game,
Mason Harrell led the squad with 15 points, while Asberry chipped in 10 and
Shelby Adams added eight.
Dating back to Jan. 1, 2021, Texas State has not lost a contest by more than one possession since falling to Louisiana at Lafayette, La., 83-77, in overtime on Friday, Jan. 1, 2021. Since there, the Bobcats have only dropped games by 2 (Jan. 29, Louisiana), 1 (Jan. 30, Louisiana) and 3 (March 6, Appalachian State).
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Two nights ago, LSU opened its 2021-22 regular season with a 101-39 win over fellow Sun Belt Conference member ULM. In just 21 minutes, Darius Days scored a game-high 30 pointes on 11-of-13 shooting, including eight of nine from behind the 3-point arc. Four additional Tigers finished in double-digits with Efton Reid leading that quartet with 16 points.
Vanderbilt heads into Sunday's matchup coming off a 91-72 win against Alabama State on Wednesday, Nov. 10. Against the Hornets, the Commadores had four student-athletes finish with double-digit points with Jordan Wright leading the way with 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting in just under 21 minutes of game action.
Earlier this week, Vanderbilt junior guard Scott Pippen, Jr., was named to the John R. Wooden Award preseason top 50 watch list. The list is comprised of 50 student-athletes, who are early front-runners for the most prestigious honors in men's college basketball. Pippen was named the preseason SEC Player of the Year by both the SEC and national media members last month and a preseason first-team All-SEC selection by the conference's coaches, too.
SERIES HISTORY
Friday night's game in Baton Rouge will mark just the second all-time meeting between the Texas State and LSU men's basketball programs and first since Dec. 22, 1987, when the Tigers won, 93-74.
Sunday's basketball game between Texas State and Vanderbilt will mark the first all-time meeting between the two programs.
