SAN MARCOS, Texas – The 22nd season of Texas State soccer kicks off on Friday at 6 p.m. against Stephen F. Austin at the Bobcat Soccer Complex that will also be the Bobcats' fifth annual Teal Match. TXST wraps up the weekend with a trip to take on Houston Baptist Sunday at 7 p.m. at the Husky Soccer Complex.
Friday's match will be streamed on ESPN+ with Ben Campos on the call. Sunday's contest will also be streamed on the Husky Sports Network and is available for free. Live stats are available for both games.
Teal Match & Goals2Cure
Friday's is the fifth annual Teal Match for Texas State, which raises awareness for ovarian cancer. This year's match is being dedicated to Brittany Crosby of Georgetown, Texas. In conjunction, the Bobcats are participating in Goals2Cure for the fourth straight year that raises funds in support of women fighting ovarian cancer.
TXST is collecting pledges for each goal scored this season with donations going directly to benefit the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition. To donate, go to the following link:

Bobcat Soccer Complex Attendance Policy

Scouting Texas State
Texas State returns 18 players from last season's team while welcoming 10 freshmen to a team that went 9-7-3 in 2019. Five of the first six matches will be played at the Bobcat Soccer Complex. Followed by a four-match road swing through Arkansas and Louisiana, the Bobcats end the year with three straight home contests.
Mackenzie Smith is the top returning scorer from last season, finding the back of the net twice.
Madison Humphrey,
Ally Kewish,
Renny Moore and
Bailey Peschel all scored once. Pacing the team with four assists in 2019 while six others were credited with one apiece.
Inexperience Between the Posts
After having the incredible goalkeeping duo of
Kathryn Budde and
Heather Martin the last four years, Texas State starts over with freshmen
Beth Agee and
Abby Lucksinger between the posts. For the Bobcats, it will be just the second time in program history that they don't have a goalkeeper with Division I experience on the roster with the first time being the inaugural season in 1999.
Scouting Stephen F. Austin
Last season saw Stephen F. Austin go 8-11-0 with a 5-6-0 mark in the Southland Conference. The Lady Jacks fell in the first round of the Southland Conference Tournament to eventual champion Lamar 6-2. During the offseason, Tony Minatta was hired as the new head coach after serving the previous six years in the same position at Iowa State.
Katelyn Termini is the top returning scorer with 10 goals and four assists. She also paced the team with 66 shots and 24 shots on goal. Mattie Musser contributed six goals on just 18 shots while Elsie Davis (2), Colleen Feagins (3), Peyton Graves (4) and Morgan Wessling (2) also found the back of the net multiple times.
In goal, Madeline Talbot played in 11 matches last season and finished with a 1.03 GAA, 55 saves and a .873 save percentage. Koral Hughes transferred in from Houston, where she made three starts in 2019.
All-Time vs. Lady Jacks
The all-time series between Texas State and SFA is tied 12-12-2. The Lady Jacks have won the last two meetings and six of the last eight. The Bobcats last win in the series was a 4-0 victory on Sept. 13, 2015 on the road. When hosting SFA, TXST is 8-4-0 but the last win in San Marcos was back on Oct. 23, 2009 by the score of 1-0 in overtime.
Scouting Houston Baptist
Last season saw Houston Baptist go 3-15-0 and finish 11th in the SLC at 2-9-0. The Huskies return 20 players from last year and welcome six newcomers. Sunday's match is the only contest on HBU's schedule.
Avery Cortez led the team with seven goals, four assists, 18 points, 31 shots and 16 shots on goal. She was also 2-for-2 on penalty kicks. Others netting multiple goals in 2019 were Xya Balderas (3), Ryan Ford (2) and Jessica Nevils (3).
Ashtyn Franks started 14 matches in goal while surrendering 28 goals for a 2.09 GAA. She made 65 saves and sported a .669 save percentage. Over six contests that included four starts, Karla Ramirez stopped 24 shots for a .774 save percentage and recorded a 1.48 GAA after giving up seven goals.
All-Time vs. Huskies
Texas State leads the all-time series 5-0-1 over HBU. Last year the Bobcats defeated the Huskies 2-1 in overtime with both goals coming from the penalty spot courtesy of
Kaylee Davis.
When playing in Houston, TXST is 1-0-1. The draw was a 1-1 contest on Aug. 31, 2012 with the victory coming Sept. 19, 2010 by a 3-1 score line.
