Baseball Hosts I-35 Rival UTSA Tuesday

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State baseball team is back in the friendly confines of Bobcat Ballpark on Tuesday to take on I-35 rival UTSA. First pitch of the game will be at 6 p.m.
 
Entering the game, the Bobcats are 18-10 on the season while the Roadrunners are 13-15.
 
A video stream and live stats will be available for the game. Brant Freeman will be on the radio call on KTSW 89.9 FM.
 
Probable Starting Pitchers
Tuesday: TXST RHP Garrett Herrmann (2-1, 3.91 ERA) vs UTSA RHP Tyler Giovanoni (0-1, 16.20 ERA)
 
Scouting Texas State
Texas State is coming off winning two of three games at Appalachian State over the weekend. The Bobcats are 4-2 this season in midweek games and have an 8-4 record on the year at home.
 
Jaylen Hubbard leads the team in batting average (.330), triples (4), slugging percentage (.505) and hit by pitches (9). His 36 hits is tied for the most on the squad with Jaxon Williams, who is hitting.327 with a team-high 29 runs scored and is second with three home runs. Both have stolen five bases on the season.
 
Will Hollis saw his reached base streak end at 21 games on Sunday. His average has dropped to .318 but he has drawn a team leading 24 free passes and paces all Bobcats with seven doubles and a .474 on-base percentage.
 
Also batting over .300 is Dalton Shuffield at .305 and remains a perfect 6-for-6 stealing bases.
 
Skyler Valentine comes in pacing TXST with five homers, 20 RBIs and four sacrifice flies.
 
Scheduled to start on the mound is Garrett Herrmann. The junior right-hander will be making his sixth midweek start of the season and his second against UTSA. He has struck out 20 batters in 23.0 innings of work and is 2-1 on the year.
 
Scouting UTSA
UTSA had a productive weekend at home as they won two of three games over previously 27th-ranked Southern Miss. This year in midweek contests, the Roadrunners are 3-3 after falling 12-11 in 12 innings to Missouri last Tuesday. They are also 4-5 on the road this season with three losses coming at Auburn.
 
Dylan Rock paces the team with a .377 batting average, 40 hits, 27 runs scored, nine doubles and 19 RBIs. He is one of five players with a team-high two triples.
 
Ryan Stacy is one of four players with a team leading two home runs. He is also hitting .369 with 11 runs scored, seven RBIs and two triples.
 
Also batting over .300 are Bryan Arias (.317) and Bryan Sturges (.322). Arias is first on the team with six stolen bases and second with 24 runs scored. Sturges' nine doubles is tied for the most on the squad and he has also hit two homers and driven in 17 runs.
 
Tyler Giovanoni is slated to get the start on the rubber for the Roadrunners. It will be the senior right-hander's first start of the season. So far, he is 0-1 with a 16.20 ERA, six walks and two strikeouts in 3.1 innings spanning four relief appearances. Opponents are also batting .308 off him in his limited action.
 
All-Time Series
Texas State leads the all-time series 58-36 after winning 8-3 on Mar. 5 in San Antonio. Tuesday is the second of three meetings this season with the third to take place on Apr. 30 on the campus of UTSA. The bobcats have not won the season series over the Roadrunners since 2016.
 
When playing at home, TXST is 28-17 all-time but have lost two of the last three games. The last victory in Bobcat Ballpark was a 5-2 contest on Mar. 13, 2018.
