Islanders Come to Town for First Midweek Contest

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State baseball team is back home for the first midweek game of the season on Wednesday when it takes on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 6 p.m. inside Bobcat Ballpark.
 
The Bobcats enter the game 5-2 on the season after taking three of four games at the Lake Area Classic over the weekend while the Islanders are 5-4. Both teams enter the contest on three-game winning streaks.
 
Brant Freeman will have the call on KTSW 89.9 FM. A video stream and live stats will also be available for the game.
 
Scouting Texas State
Texas State is coming off two wins at McNeese and one over Creighton in Lake Charles, Louisiana. The Bobcats are off to their best start since winning nine of its first 11 games of the 2014 season.
 
Jaxon Williams leads the team and is third in the Sun Belt Conference with a .500 batting average and .600 on-base percentage. Both Chase Evans (.412) and Jaylen Hubbard (.407) are hitting over .400 and have stolen a base. John Wuthirch comes in pacing the TXST in runs scored (11), doubles (3) and triples (2).
 
Driving in a team-high seven runs is Ryan Newman. Two of his RBIs have been on sacrifice flies, which ties him for the lead in the conference.
 
Slated to get his first career start in a Texas State uniform on Wednesday is junior right-hander Garrett Herrmann. He has yet to appear in a game this season.
 
Both Kyle Bradford and Brent Hebert have made three appearances out of the bullpen. Hebert has not allowed a run in 5.1 innings while Bradford has only given up one in five frames. Brandon Lewis has recorded both of the team's saves this season, tying him for the most in the Sun Belt.
 
Scouting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is coming off a 2-1 weekend in the Kleberg Bank Classic with victories over Ohio State and Oral Roberts. The Islanders followed with a 3-2 win against the Buckeyes on their campus Monday afternoon.
 
Drake Osborn leads the team with a .400 batting average, 14 hits, eight runs scored and five doubles. He also has six RBIs, a .543 slugging percentage and .462 on-base percentage. Itchy Burts enters with a .361 average at the plate with 13 hits, two of them being doubles.
 
Thomas Jeffries paces the squad with four stolen bases. The only triple TAMUCC has on the season has come off the bat of Nick Anderson. He has added six RBIs, six runs scored and three doubles. Enrique Sanchez paces all players with eight RBIs.
 
Scheduled to start on Wednesday is Tyler Miller. The freshman right-hander has made two relief appearances against BYU (Feb. 21) and UTA (Feb. 17). He has struck out three in three innings while issuing two walks but has yet to allow a run.
 
A.G. Ayala has made a team leading four appearances with three of them being out of the bullpen. He sports a 2.31 ERA with 14 strikeouts and five walks in 11.2 innings of work. Both Cody LeCompte (0-1, 10.80 ERA, 6 K) and Zach Rumfield (1.80 ERA, 5 K) have tossed five frames out of the pen.
 
All-Time Series vs. Islanders
Texas State has a 31-9 record all-time against TAMUCC. The Bobcats have won the last five meetings and are 17-4 when facing the Islanders in San Marcos. Last time the teams played was Apr. 6, 2016 that saw TXST win 4-1.
