PREVIEW: Bobcats to compete in 2019 Troy Cox Classic

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State softball team (2-2) will head west to for the five-team 2019 Troy Cox Classic over the weekend. The team list outside of the Bobcats includes Bradley (1-4), Montana (1-4), New Mexico State (4-0), and San Jose State (3-3). The tournament is hosted by New Mexico State at the N.M. State Softball Complex in Las Cruces, N.M.

The Bobcats enter the weekend coming off a weather-altered Bobcat Classic. The Cats split four games over the weekend, dropping close games against UTSA (3-2) and North Dakota State (4-3) and defeating Colorado State (7-3) and North Dakota State (9-1).

ABOUT TEXAS STATE
TXST managed to score 21 total runs during the Bobcat Classic, however, only five runs were put on the board in the two losses combined. The offense scored a total of 16 runs in the two Bobcat victories. The Texas State defense allowed only 11 runs during the four-game tournament schedule.

Junior infielder Hailey MacKay paced the Bobcat offense, recording five hits in 12 trips to the plate for a .417 batting average. MacKay added two of TXST's three extra base hits over the weekend, including a three-run home run in the bottom of the 10th inning in the 4-3 loss to North Dakota State. She registered six RBI, nine total bases and four walks drawn.

Junior outfielder Christiana McDowell was a key piece to the Bobcat attack. She collected five hits in 12 plate appearances (.417 average), scored two runs and added a stolen base.

In the circle, junior pitcher Dalilah Barrera was lights out. She made her first three appearances in a Texas State uniform, including two starts. She totaled 10.1 innings of work and yielded just one earned run on six hits, while striking out 13 opposing batters. She posted a 2-0 record with an earned run average of 0.68 and a WHIP of 0.89.

UP NEXT FOR THE BOBCATS
Texas State will host Sam Houston State a 5 p.m. on Feb. 20 at Bobcat Softball Stadium before continuing the tournament portion of the schedule with a trip to Tampa, Fla. for the 2019 USF Tournament. The tournament is hosted by South Florida and will feature a pair of games against both Virginia Tech and the Bulls.
