SAN MARCOS, Texas- The Texas State women's tennis team began its whirlwind spring break week sweeping Colorado State, 4-0, in a non-conference match at the Bobcat Tennis Complex.
"We finally had the team come together with everyone playing well today," said head coach
Tory Plunkett. "Senior
Eva Dench presented a motivational speech and led the team to a win. It is a good start for the spring break trip."
The victory over Colorado State is the first of four matches in five days for the Bobcats this week. Texas State also plays three matches in California, beginning with a match against Harvard at the Knollwood Club in Santa Barbara on Wednesday. They also play matches at Loyola Marymount on Thursday and at Cal State Northridge on Saturday.
Texas State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead against Colorado State when the Bobcats won two of the three doubles matches to capture the team point.
Pippa Carr and
Ana Perez combined for their third straight win with a 6-2 victory over Riley reeves and Celine Voss. After
Eva Dench and
Alex Jones fell 6-2 against Alyssa Grijalva and Emily Kolbow in the No. 1 match,
Julia Navajo-Melendez and
Joy Chia Ming Ming clinched the point with a 6-3 victory over Madison Porter and Sandra Keta.
The Bobcats increased their lead to 2-0 when
Ana Perez recorded her second consecutive victory in a No. 3 match with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Grijalva. The win was her sixth straight victory overall as she also recorded four wins in No. 4 matches before playing in her first No. 3 match at Rice on Feb. 3.
Navajo-Melendez made the score 3-0 when she beat Voss in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 over Voss. Jones clinched the win in straight sets after capturing the first set tiebreaker, 7-1, and winning the second set by a score of 6-1.
Dench came close to recording her first singles victory of the season as her No. 1 match was halted with her serving match point and leading 6-3, 6-5 after Texas State clinched the victory. Carr's match on the No. 2 court also was halted with Reeves leading 7-5, 4-3. Chia Ming Ming also trailed in the third set of her No. 5 match, 2-0 after she captured the second set, 6-2, and lost the first set, 6-1.
