SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State women's tennis team looks for its second straight win and fourth overall victory of the season when the Bobcats host I-35 rival UTSA at 2 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon at the Bobcat Tennis Complex.
Texas State is coming off a 4-3 victory over another I-35 rival, Incarnate Word, as the Bobcats evened their overall record to 3-3 this season. In that match,
Pippa Carr teamed with
Ana Perez to defeat Victoria Kareh and Sarah Savedra by a score of 6-0 in the No. 2 doubles match.
Eva Dench and
Alex Jones clinched the doubles point for the Bobcats when they won a 6-4 decision over Matea Zemunik and Rachel Sadiq in the No. 1 match.
Dench and Jones have combined for a 7-6 overall record as a doubles team, and are 2-1 in No. 1 matches this spring and have a 3-1 mark in dual matches. Carr and Perez have combined for a 3-1 mark in No. 2 doubles, while
Joy Chia Ming Ming and
Julia Navajo-Melendez are 1-0 in No. 3 doubles matches.
In singles action, Perez improved to 10-9 overall and 5-1 in dual matches this year when she won her No. 4 singles match by a score of 6-1, 6-2. Chia Ming Ming also won her fourth dual match of the spring and is 4-2 this season after winning her No. 5 singles match over Maria Batchinsky by a score of 6-2, 6-3 last Friday. Jones clinched the win with a 6-3, 6-4 victory in the No. 6 match and evened her record to 1-1 this spring.
UTSA enters Tuesday's match with a 4-4 record this season after dropping their last three matches. The Roadrunners fell at No. 23-ranked Rice and against Colorado last weekend in Houston. UTSA suffered a 6-1 setback against the Owls on Friday before falling 4-3 against the Buffaloes on Saturday.
Maria Rosell Canudas is nationally ranked in singles this season and enters Tuesday's match with an 8-0 record this spring. She and Kylee Kato have combined for a 7-0 record as the team's No. 1 doubles combination.
Following the match, Texas State travels to Rice for a match that begins at 11 a.m. on Friday at the George R. Brown Tennis Center in Houston.
