SAN MARCOS, Texas – Playing in a match for the second straight day, the Texas State women's tennis team posted a pair of victories in singles matches on Saturday afternoon when the Bobcats suffered a 5-2 loss against Northwestern State at the Bobcat Tennis Complex.
Ana Perez posted Texas State's first victory when she won a straight-set decision against Emilija Dancetovic in a No. 4 singles match. Perez won the first set 7-6 after claiming the tiebreaker by a score of 8-6. She also captured the second set by a score of 6-3.
Texas State's second victory came when
Julia Navajo-Melendez defeated Polina Mutel in three sets on the No. 3 court. After dropping the first set by a score of 6-3, Navajo-Melendez came back to win the second set, 6-1. She clinched her victory by winning a tiebreaker, 7-4, to capture the third set.
The Bobcats began the day by losing the team point in doubles.
Eva Dench and
Alex Jones fell 6-1 against Iryna Vardanian and Mutel in the No. 1 match. Then
Pippa Carr and Perez lost a 7-5 decision in the No. 2 match against Polina Ivanova and Dancetovic.
In the other singles action, Carr suffered a 6-3, 7-5 loss against Vardanian on the No. 2 court, while Jones dropped a 7-5, 6-4 decision against Judit Castillo in the No. 6 match.
After Perez won her match, Dench fell in three sets against Ivanova on the No. 1 court. Ivanova won the first set and third sets by a score of 6-2. In between, Dench won the second set 7-6 after capturing a 7-5 tiebreaker.
In the No. 5 match,
Joy Chia Ming Ming suffered another three-set loss against Vladislava Litvinova, who won the first set by a 6-1 score. After Chia Ming Ming won a 7-5 tiebreaker to win the second set, Litvinova closed out the match winning the third set by a score of 6-1.
The loss drops Texas State's record to 2-2 this season. The Bobcats return to action on Sunday when they close out a weekend homestand against Louisiana Tech, which enters the match with a 5-4 record after winning 7-0 at Incarnate Word on Saturday.
