NEW ORLEANS – The Texas State women's tennis team's season ended when the No. 7-seeded Bobcats suffered a 4-0 loss against No. 2-seeded and No. 53-ranked South Alabama in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Conference Championships on Friday at the City Park Pepsi Tennis Center.
The Bobcats got off to a tough start early when they failed to capture a set in a pair of doubles matches and surrendered the doubles point to the Jaguars.
The first loss came on the No. 3 court when
Katy Collins and
Ammaarah Tim fell 6-0 against Monica Mitta and Alina Zolotareva. Then,
Ana Perez and
Yadira Rubio also dropped a 6-0 decision against Michaela Meszarosova and Laura Valkova in the No. 1 match.
The No. 2 match ended with
Pippa Carr and
Eva Dench trailing 3-2 against Cinta Maria Papke and Alexandria Stiteler after the Jaguars had clinched the team point.
Texas State looked to be in contention in three of the singles matches, but they were stopped after South Alabama clinched the 4-0 victory when the Jaguars won the other three contests.
First, Dench suffered a 6-1, 6-2 loss against Stiteler in the top-seeded match. Then, Tim fell 6-3, 6-1 against Laura Matuskova in the No. 6 contest. South Alabama clinched the victory when Rubio fell 6-2, 6-2 against Papke on the No. 3 court.
In the other three matches, Perez captured the first set of her No. 5 match against Zolotareva by a score of 6-2. She also trailed 5-4 and was on serve in the second set.
Collins fought hard in the first set of her No. 4 match against Meszarosova before dropping a tiebreaker, 8-6, in the first set and trailed 1-0 in the second set.
In the No. 2 match, Carr dropped the first set 6-4 against Mitta and was on serve trailing 3-2 in the second set.
Texas State's
Ana Perez won the first set 6-2 in her the No. 5 match against Zolotareva. They were on serve at 5-4 in the second set.
The loss drops Texas State's record to 9-13 while South Alabama improves to 20-5 and will meet UT Arlington in the tournament's semifinals on Saturday.
