SAN MARCOS, Texas - The Texas State women's tennis team won four singles matches, including the final two matches of the day, en route to a 4-3 comeback victory over UT Rio Grande Valley at the Bobcat Tennis Complex on Saturday.
The Bobcats began the day honoring
Katy Collins in a "Senior Day" celebration. After the match began, Collins teamed with
Eva Dench for a 6-3 victory against Natacha Minc and Dominique Esparza in the No. 2 doubles match.
However, Texas State surrendered the doubles team point whenthe Vaqueros won the other two doubles matches.
Pippa Carr and
Ammaarah Tim suffered a 6-0 loss against Dominique Ibarra and Doris Aleksovska on the No. 3 doubles court. After Dench and Collins won their match,
Ana Perez and
Yadira Rubio dropped a 6-3 decision against Reegan Greenwood and Tara Donaho on the No. 1 court.
The Bobcats came back to tie the score at 1-1 when Perez won her 10th singles match of the year with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Dorris Aleksovska by a score of 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 5 match.
Then, the two teams split the next four matches to set up a dramatic ending that featured the final match of the day going a full three sets. The Vaqueros recorded a pair of wins when Collins dropped a 6-3, 6-0 decision against Ibarra in the No. 4 match, and Dench suffered a 7-5, 7-5 decision against Greenwood on the No. 1 court.
Texas State's next two wins came when Tim beat Donaho by a score of 6-1, 6-3 in the No. 6 match and Carr came back to defeat Esparza in three sets by a score of 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in the No. 2 match.
The match score was tied at 3-3 when Rubio clinched Texas State's eighth victory of the season by winning the No. 3 match in three sets. She opened the match winning the first set by a score of 7-5 before Minc came back to capture the second set by a score of 6-1. Rubio came back and clinched the victory for Texas State when she won the third set by a score of 6-3.
The win improves Texas State's overall record to 8-12 this season while UT Rio Grande Valley drops to 9-9. The victory also improves the Bobcats' record in home matches to 3-4.
Texas State's next match will come in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament when the Bobcats travel to New Orleans on April 21-24 at the City Park Tennis Courts.
