SAN MARCOS, Texas - Texas State women's soccer head coach
Kat Conner announced the addition of five players for the 2016 season on the first day of the signing period. Donning Bobcat uniforms this fall will be Kathryn Budde, Sarah Gavin, Jordan Kondikoff, Heather Martin and Genesis Turman.
"The 2016 class is an outstanding class with a lot of skill and talent," said Conner. "What I love most about this class is their mentality. They have a desire to improve upon their talent and hunger to get to the next level."
Kathryn BuddeBudde is a 5-foot, 8-inch goalkeeper from East Central High School in San Antonio, Texas. She is an all-district academic honoree and was named 2013 Newcomer of the Year. During her four years, Budde was coached by Shawn Muenster.
Along with playing soccer, she serves as an assistant coach at Heritage Middle School for the seventh and eighth grade soccer teams.
She played for the San Antonio based club team Classics. When it came to picking where to play collegiately, Budde choose the Bobcats over Incarnate Word and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
"Kathryn is a great find for us. She is very smart and reads the game well, which gives her correct positioning on shots and crosses on the ground or in the air," Conner said. "What I like about Kathryn is her mentality and work ethic. She is ready to improve and raise her level every day."
Sarah Gavin
Gavin has lettered two years at Seven Lakes High School in Katy, Texas for Amy Davis at center back, and helped lead the team to the regional finals both seasons. The 5-foot, 6-inch soon to be freshman is a two-time all-district first team selection. In 2014, she earned second team all-state honors and followed with an all-state honorable mention season last year.
Since 2013, Gavin has played club ball with the Albion Hurricanes in Houston, Texas for Daniel Hill and Dylan Glad. She serves as a team captain splitting time between the center back, outside back and midfield.
"Sarah is a center defender who leads and directs out on the field. It is like having a coach on the field," said Conner. "She is very smart and reads the game well. She knows what the opposing team is trying to do, which allows her to pick off passes or make a hard tackle on a player. Sarah will be a key asset for us as she will replace
Kristen Champion on the backline."
Jordan Kondikoff
Kondikoff is off to a strong start her senior year as team captain at Dr. John Horn High School in Mesquite, Texas. So far the future Bobcat has netted 10 goals and been credited with 10 assists while leading the Jaguars to a 12-0-1 record.
Prior to this season, Kondikoff has been a first team all-district, all-academic and offensive MVP selection.
She played for D'Feeters soccer club based out of Farmers Branch, Texas. Kondikoff picked Texas State over Arkansas, Texas A&M and UCF.
"Jordan is a spark plug, playing with such intensity and passion. She never quits and is a true competitor," Conner said. "She is very technical, tactically sees the game and knows how to spring a teammate in behind the opposing team's defense with a penetrating pass while also being dangerous herself to score a goal. The fans will love to watch Jordie play because of the excitement she brings."
Heather MartinComing to Texas State from Midlothian High School in Midlothian, Texas is Martin. The 5-foot, 7-inch goalkeeper led the team to a 22-2-1 record and the District 8-6A championship last season. On the field, she recorded 76 saves and 14 shutouts while allowing 13 goals on her way to second team all-district honors.
Martin is also a member of the National Honor Society and the student council.
On the club scene, she is a member of FC Dallas located in Dallas, Texas.
"Heather is a tremendous athlete. She has good hands and great reactions, which makes her one of the top goalkeepers in the state of Texas for the 2016 class," said Conner. "She loves challenges and when her team needs her to keep them in the game with a big save, she is there. She trains with complete focus to improve her game every day."
Genesis Turman
Turman will arrive to San Marcos from Allen High School in Allen, Texas. A 5-foot, 6-inch defensive back, she is a three-time district Defender of the Year and was named second team all-state as a junior.
Along with soccer, Turman runs for the track team. She competes in the 100 and 200 meters and the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 meter relays. Every year in the classroom she has been in the top 10 percent of her class.
Turman played for the Dallas based club team Arsenal. She picked the Bobcats over offers from Little Rock and UTEP.
"Genesis is a versatile player that can play as a defender, outside midfielder and forward," Conner said. She is a very determined athlete that plays with intensity and heart. Genesis doesn't like to lose and will put the team on her back and lead them to victory, much like senior
Lynsey Curry this past season.
"I'm excited for her because she is ready to improve upon herself and push her talent to become a really good player at the next level."
