Women’s Tennis Team Looks To Improve Winning Streak

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State women's tennis team looks to win its third straight match when the Bobcats travel to San Antonio and play Air Force on Saturday at the UTSA Tennis Center. The match begins at 11 a.m. 
 
Following the Air Force match, Texas State travels to Houston and plays at No. 29-ranked Rice at the George R. Brown Tennis Center on Sunday, Feb. 28.
 
The Bobcats won a pair of matches last Saturday when they defeated Northwestern State, 4-2, and beat Alcorn State, 4-0, at the Jack Fisher Lady Demon Complex in Natchitoches. This was the first time since Jan. 29, 2011 that the Bobcats have won two matches on the same day.
 
Texas State enters Saturday's match having won three of its last four matches after defeating Incarnate Word on Feb. 13 and falling at Louisiana Tech on Feb. 19.
 
A LOOK AT THE COMPETITION
Air Force enters Saturday's match with a 5-4 overall record after winning two of its three matches in Kansas last weekend. The Falcons lost 7-0 at Kansas State on Saturday before bouncing back with a 4-3 victory at Missouri-Kansas City and 7-0 win over Rockhurst on Sunday.
Junior Chloe Forlini leads the Falcons with a 7-2 record in singles play and a 4-3 mark in doubles this season.
 
Rice enters Sunday's match ranked No. 29 in the latest ITA Collegiate Rankings and have a 5-2 overall record after opening their Conference USA schedule with a 4-3 win at Marshall. Katherine Ip is ranked No. 34 among singles players with a 5-0 record this spring in No. 2 doubles matches. Lindsey Hodge is ranked No. 84 and enters Sunday's match with a 3-4 dual match record this spring in No. 1 matches after going 10-1 in tournament play last fall.
 
BOBCAT BITES
Junior Eva Dench and senior Katy Collins have won their last three decisions as a doubles team after recording a 7-5 win at Louisiana Tech and a 6-2 victory against Alcorn State. Dench has a 1-2 record in No. 1 singles matches this season after dropping a 6-4, 6-3 decision at Louisiana Tech last week. Her other two matches were halted after her winning the first set in each match.
 
Junior Pippa Carr played in the first No. 2 matches of her career and posted a 2-0 record in singles matches. Carr's first win came in Texas State's 4-2 victory at Northwestern State and her second win clinched a 4-0 win against Alcorn State. She also teamed with Joy Chia Ming Ming to split a pair of decisions in doubles play. They combined for a 6-2 win at Northwestern State to clinch the team point and were leading 5-3 against Alcorn State when their match was halted.
 
Joy Chia Ming Ming also improved to 3-0 in singles matches after clinching the win against Northwestern State with a 7-5, 6-3 victory in her first No. 5 match of her career. She also won the first set and was tied in the second set in a No. 5 match against Alcorn State.
 
Ana Perez and Yadira Rubio won a pair of top-seeded doubles matches against Northwestern State and Alcorn State to improve their overall record to 5-2 this season. Rubio also recorded the first singles victories of her career when she won a pair of No. 4 matches against Northwestern State and Alcorn State. Perez also recorded a win in a No. 6 match against Alcorn State.
 
NEXT WEEK
Following the match at Rice, Texas State travels to Las Vegas and plays matches against Southern Utah on March 5  and at UNLV on March 6. Both matches begin at 10 a.m.
