SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State men's basketball team looks to make it two straight victories over I-35 rival UTSA on Friday. The game is scheduled to tip at 7:30 p.m. in the Convocation Center.
Heading into the game, the Bobcats are 2-2 on the season while the Roadrunners are 1-4.
Last Time Out
In Monday's home opener, Texas State fell by four points to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Kavin Gilder-Tilbury led all players with 20 points and nine rebounds. It was the second game in-a-row for the senior to score 20 or more points, becoming the first Bobcat under head coach
Danny Kaspar to do so and first since Joel Wright did so during the 2013 Western Athletic Conference Tournament.
Bobby Conley scored a career-high 19 points as well. He made 6-of-9 shots, was 2-for-3 on three-pointers and converted 5-of-7 free throw attempts.
Down low,
Maljhum McCrea grabbed eight rebounds with five being offensive boards. The Miami, Florida native also dished out a game and career-high four assists and tied his career best with two blocks.
Texas State made 11 three-pointers, tied for the highest amount in a game under Kaspar. The last time the Bobcats made 11 treys in a game was Nov. 30, 2013 against Northern Kentucky in the Cure UCD Classic in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Scouting UTSA
UTSA is coming off a 78-58 loss at Lamar on Tuesday and a 10-point win Saturday at home over Prairie View A&M. All three of the Roadrunners other losses have come on the road to Fresno State, Oregon State and UIC.
The lone player on the UTSA roster averaging double-digits in points is Jeff Beverly at 15.6. He has made 40.0 percent of his shots, is 2-for-15 on three-point attempts and 24-of-32 at the free throw line. The junior is second on the team with three rejections and third at 5.6 rebounds per game.
Giovanni De Nicolao is dishing out a team-high 3.4 assists per game. The freshman from Italy is scoring 8.6 points per game but is making just 34.1 percent of his shot attempts. Also putting up 8.6 ppg is Byron Frohnen, who paces the squad with a 48.6 field goal percentage.
Entering with 8.0 rpg and four blocks to lead the Roadrunners is Nick Allen. He has recorded two double-doubles this season and is netting 8.4 ppg.
All-Time Series
UTSA leads the all-time series with Texas State 33-26. When playing in San Antonio, the Bobcats are 11-14 with the last win being Jan. 29, 2013 by the score of 81-78 in overtime.
In last year's meeting, Texas State dominated the Roadrunners at home 76-53.
Ethan Montalvo tied the program's single game record with eight steals in the contest. The last time the Bobcats won back-to-back games in the series was Feb. 25, 2012 and Jan. 19, 2013 with both games taking place on the road.
