SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State men's basketball team plays the second of three consecutive road games against South Alabama Thursday at 7:05 p.m. in the Mitchell Center.
The Bobcats go into the contest with a 7-5 overall record and are 1-2 in the Sun Belt Conference after falling on the road to Appalachian State over the weekend. The Jaguars sport a 6-9 mark and 1-3 in league play, picking up a victory last week at Georgia Southern.
In the all-time series, Texas State has come away victorious in three of the four meetings. Last year the Cats won both meetings by double figures. Three of the four games have been decided by at least 10 points with the exception of the first meeting on Feb. 20, 2014, a 67-66 Bobcat win in overtime at home.
Kavin Gilder-Tilbury leads Texas State offensively with 14.3 points per game. He shares the top rebounding mark (6.3) with
Anthony Roberson.
Emani Gant comes in averaging 11.3 ppg and 5.0 rpg. The most recent member of the Bobcats' 800-point club has made 11-of-25 (40.0 percent) from the field and is 12-for-16 at the free throw line.
Coming off the bench,
Cameron Naylor enters shooting 50.0 percent of his shots and contributes 3.0 rpg.
Ojai Black and Gilder-Tilbury both have four steals in SBC play. Roberson is averaging 1.7 blocks per game, the second most in the conference.
The Bobcats head into Thursday with the fifth best scoring defense in Division I at 59.8 ppg. They are also 11th and 12th, respectively, in turnovers forced (17.33) and turnover margin (+4.3).
Pacing USA offensively is Ken Williams with 14.1 points and 2.9 assists per game. He has converted 83.7 percent of his free throws but is making 36.7 percent from the field and 29.9 percent from beyond the arc. His 26 treys are the most on the squad followed by 22 from Shaw Calhoun.
Georgi Boyanov is the sixth leading rebounding in the SBC at 7.9 per contest and making a team best 57.6 percent of his shots. He is also the only other player in double figures at 10.1 ppg.
