SAN MARCOS, Texas – This week sees the Texas State men's basketball team play its final two non-conference road games. First for the Bobcats is a trip to Prairie View A&M for a 7 p.m. tipoff on Wednesday in the William Nicks Building.
Texas State (4-2) is coming off a nine-point victory over Texas-Rio Grande Valley Sunday afternoon. The Bobcats closed the last seven minutes of the game on a 15-6 run with all of the points coming at the rim or the free throw line.
Although the Panthers are 0-9 on the season with all of the contests being on the road, they have played one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the nation. Some notable opponents PVAMU has played are Baylor, Houston, UNLV, VCU, Wisconsin and mostly recently Tulane on Monday.
Three players are averaging double-figures in points for Texas State led by
Kavin Gilder-Tilbury's 13.5 after his 22-point career performance against UTRGV.
Emani Gant is close behind him at 13.3 ppg and has scored at least 10 points in all four games he has played. Rounding out the double-digit trio is
Cameron Naylor at 10.0 ppg.
Gant leads the team with 7.5 rpg and has added six blocks and five steals. Junior forward
Anthony Roberson is second with 5.8 rpg and Naylor contributes 5.6 rebounds per contest.
Ethan Montalvo leads the Sun Belt Conference and is 12th in the nation with 2.7 spg. Of his 16 steals this year, all but one have come in the last three games. The Omaha, Nebraska native is averaging 8.2 ppg as well.
Leading Texas State with 17 assists is
Ojai Black along with adding 8.8 ppg with a 47.7 field goal percentage.
Tevin Bellinger paces the Panthers in scoring at 13.2 ppg. He is making just 36.6 percent of his shots and 28.9 percent on three-pointers but has nailed 24-of-29 (82.8 percent) at the charity stripe.
Down low, Admassu Williams is grabbing a team-high 7.8 rpg. He also paces the squad with 10 blocks and a 46.7 field goal percentage while his 11.8 ppg ranks second.
Two other key players for PVAMU is Jayrn Johnson and Avery Lomax. Johnson enters with a team best 14 steals and is contributing 7.9 points and 2.4 rebounds per game. Lomax, playing in eight games, has dished out a team-high 16 assists and recorded 13 steals.
