SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State Baseball and Head Coach
Ty Harrington announced the addition of
Steven Trout as an assistant coach on Tuesday. Trout joins the staff after three seasons as an assistant coach at West Virginia and will work with the hitters and the outfield for the Bobcats.

"We are very excited to welcome Steven back to the Texas State family," said Harrington. "I believe in the energy and passion for the game Steven has. It's very infectious and will impact our players and program in a positive way."
Trout began his coaching career at Texas State when he served as a volunteer assistant from 2009-10. He worked as the catchers and first base coach while assisting with hitters and infielders during one of Texas State's most successful seasons in the program's history.
The Bobcats went 41-17 in 2009, a school record for wins, and advanced to the NCAA Austin Regional after winning the Southland Conference regular-season championship. Texas State repeated as conference champions in 2010 with a record of 38-11.
Trout's short time at Texas State, though, was just the beginning of his coaching career. While at West Virginia, under his former collegiate coach Randy Mazey, Trout helped the team to some of the best offensive numbers in the Big 12 Conference. Last season, West Virginia led the Big 12 Conference in home runs with 49. In addition, Trout guided freshman Kyle Davis to a Freshman All-American season.
In 2014, the Mountaineers ranked No. 1 in hitting, batting at a .287 clip under Trout's tutelage. Individual standouts included Bobby Boyd (.356), Billy Fleming (.351) and Ryan McBroom (.341), who stood No. 1-3 in the Big 12 in batting average. Additionally, McBroom was fourth in RBI with 49, fifth in slugging percentage (.512) and seventh in home runs (8). Both Boyd and McBroom were drafted in the MLB Draft while Fleming signed a contract in the offseason.

During Trout's first season, the team finished with a .275 batting average and 32 home runs. McBroom hit a Big 12-leading 12 home runs and outfielder Jacob Rice earned the WVU batting title with a .333 batting average.
In that initial season for Trout, three players eclipsed the .300 average mark while four players finished with 10 or more doubles. Eight Mountaineer batters earned All-Big 12 honors under Trout's guidance.
Before West Virginia, Trout served as the head coach of Texarkana College, his former team. In addition to the on-field and day-to-day operations, he also scheduled competitions and practice organization and oversaw team travel plans, budget, game management, recruiting and fundraising.
At Texarkana, Trout led the Bulldogs to a 34-25 mark in 2012, with the squad holding a conference-leading .303 batting average. He coached the conference player of the year, and seven players were selected to the Region XIV East All-Conference Team.
Prior to his appointment at Texarkana, Trout was a volunteer assistant at Houston under Todd Whitting for the 2011 season. While at UH, Trout served as the third base coach and also coached the hitters, infielders and base runners. He also served as the camp director and assisted with recruiting and fundraising. The Cougars finished as the Conference USA Tournament runners-up that season.
As a player, Trout spent two seasons at Texarkana College, earning all-conference honors and advancing to the 2005 NJCAA World Series in 2005 before finishing his collegiate career at TCU. During his senior season with the Horned Frogs, Trout posted a .326 batting average with 55 runs scored and 44 RBI, while being one of two players to start all 62 games. Following the season, Trout was named to the Mountain West All-Conference Second Team and was an all-region selection at the Houston Regional. TCU won the Mountain West Conference Championship in 2006 and 2007 and also competed in the NCAA Regional in both seasons.
Following his collegiate career, Trout played baseball with the Fort Worth Cats of the American Association before joining the Macon Music in the South Coast League. In April 2008, he joined the Kansas City T-Bones and was a member of the 2008 Northern League Championship team.
A native of Hooks, Texas, Trout earned a bachelor's degree in general studies from TCU in 2007. He is married to the former Blair Eckerle.
