AUSTIN – Texas State and No. 25 Texas played to a 1-1 tie through 4 1/3 innings before the game was called due to inclement weather. Both teams waited through an hour-long delay before the game was called.
At the time the game was called, the Bobcats had the advantage in hits, 4-3, and were at bat in the top of the fifth. Each player at the top of the lineup knocked a base hit with
Granger Studdard picking up an RBI on a sacrifice fly.
Starter
Dylan Bein did not give up a hit in two innings of work, retiring six consecutive batters.
Texas State was first on the board with a run in the top of the first inning.
Cory Geisler got the Bobcats going with a leadoff hit straight up the middle.
Cody Lovejoy followed with one through the right side, and
Garrett Mattlage put both runners in scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. A
Granger Studdard groundout scored Geisler for the lone run of the inning and an early 1-0 lead.
The Bobcats followed with impressive defense. In the second inning, after a fly out and a groundout, Lovejoy came up with an impressive diving play for the final out of the inning. In the third inning, the Bobcat defense turned a nice double play with runners at the corners and one out to keep Texas scoreless through three.
For Texas, outfielder Ben Johnson knocked a double to lead off the bottom of the fourth and went to third base on a wild pitch. He scored on a sacrifice fly from Mark Payton to tie the game. That would be all Texas State would give up before the weather rolled in during the fifth.
Texas State will continue on the road for the team's final regular season series of the year. The Bobcats travel to UT Arlington for a three-game series on Thursday through Saturday with games at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and 2 p.m. on Saturday to complete the regular season.
