Women’s Tennis Team Plays Troy In SBC Tournament


 
San Marcos, Texas. – After winning its final regular season match, the Texas State women's tennis team will travel to New Orleans and compete in the Sun Belt Conference Championship at the City Park Tennis Center.The Bobcats enter the tournament as the No. 5 seed and will meet No. 4 seeded Troy in the quarterfinals on Friday at 8:00 am.
 
The tournament begins on Thursday with No. 8-seeded UL Lafayette facing No. 9-seeded Western Kentucky on Thursday beginning at 10:00 a.m. The winner will play top-seeded Georgia State on Friday at 8:00 a.m. The winner of that match will face the winner of the Texas State vs. Troy match in the semifinals on Saturday at 10:00 a.m.
 
The other quarterfinal matches include No. 3 South Alabama playing No. 6-seeded UL Monroe and No. 2 UT Arlington facing No. 7 seeded Arkansas State. The winner of those two matches will meet in the other semifinal match on Saturday. The championship will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday.
 
Texas State enters the tournament with a 9-10 overall record and is 3-1 against Sun Belt Conference teams this season with wins over UL Lafayette, UL Monroe and Arkansas State. The lone loss came at South Alabama.
 
Senior Jessica Kahts is Texas State's top player and one of three Bobcats to win at least 10 matches this spring. She enters the tournament with an 11-7 dual match record in No. 1 singles this season. She also has nine wins in doubles matches while teaming with Ana Laura Gutierrez on the No. 1 courts this season.
 
Freshman Eva Dench has also won 11 singles matches this spring, including three of her five outings as Texas State's No. 4 player. She will play in the No. 4 position for the Bobcats in the tournament.
 
Junior Shannon Beckett also has 10 wins in singles matches and owns a 4-1 record in No. 5 matches. Beckett has teamed with Monica Pieratt as Texas State's No. 2 doubles tandem and they enter the tournament with an 8-7 record.
 
Dench and Katy Collins own a 9-3 record as Texas State's No. 3 doubles team. Dench also has teamed with Bérénice Van den Bergh twice and won both matches, including one time this spring on a No. 3 court.
 
Troy enters the tournament with a 14-7 record this season and the Trojans are 2-1 against Sun Belt Conference teams. The two wins came against Arkansas State and UL Monroe. Troy enters the match having won nine of its last 10 matches. Sophomore Trang Huynh leads Troy with a 14-3 record in No. 1 singles matches this season, and has teamed with Anja Cosovic for a 17-2 mark in No. 1 doubles. Cosovic owns a 16-3 mark in No. 3 singles matches and is 1-0 in her only No. 2 match.
