San Marcos, Texas – Texas State won its second straight home game, and came away with a season sweep of ULM, beating the Warhawks, 65-57, Thursday night at Strahan Coliseum. With the win the Bobcats moved to 3-6 in the Sun Belt, a half game out of sixth.
Tied 53-53 with 2:06 to go, Gordon Ball gave the Bobcats the lead for good. He grabbed the offensive board following a Joel Wright jumper and laid the ball in for a 55-53 lead. The next trip down the floor Ball hit a jumper from 15 feet, for a four point lead. It was the middle of an 8-0 run in the final two minutes of the game, allowing Texas State to take a 63-55 lead, highlighted by an alley-oop from Wes Davis to Wright.
Davis ignited the Bobcat attack early. He hit two quick threes, with the second coming off a curl at the top of the key, giving the team a 14-13 lead. Davis followed it up by stealing the inbounds pass and going coast-to-coast for a layup as he scored 10 of Texas State's first 16 points.
Davis' playmaking ability started a 13-0 run which allowed the Bobcats to take a 21-13 run. Wright capped the run with a three-pointer of his own, giving Texas State its largest lead of the game to that point.
Kavin Gilder-Tilbury kept up the tough defense towards the end of the first half, grabbing a steal along the left sideline and starting a fastbreak which led to a Phil Hawkins layup and a 35-25 advantage for the Bobcats.
Reid Koenen helped protect the lead in the second half on the offensive end. He hit a straight away three on the first possession of the second half and followed it up with another three a few minutes later to answer a Warhawk run, bringing the lead back out to 45-39. After ULM tied the game at 45-45, Koenen burst down the right sideline on the secondary break for a layup and gave the Bobcats back a 49-46 lead with 5:23 to go.
Texas State will complete a two-game homestand on Saturday at 4:30 p.m., when it takes on UL-Lafayette. At halftime the team will retire the jersey of former Bobcat and Indiana Pacer Jeff Foster. The game will be broadcast on the CW Austin and can be heard on KTSW 89.9 FM and www.txstatebobcats.com.
