SAN MARCOS, Texas – Lightning and rain plagued the Bobcat Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon as the contest against Texas State and Rice resulted in a 0-0 double-overtime tie. With the tie, Texas State moves to 2-3-1 while Rice moves to 1-2-2 on the year.
Both squads silenced each other in the first half of play, despite a quality scoring opportunity for Rice in the 12th minute. The Bobcat defense held strong, however, and denied the Owls an accurate shot. Texas State's primary scoring opportunity of the half came with 11 minutes remaining as the Bobcats tallied back-to-back corner kicks, but they could not convert.
The two squads experienced a pair of delays during the contest. The first lightning delay of the game occurred at the start of halftime. Once the two squads were allowed to return to the field, skies let loose and the teams played just under 15 minutes of rain-soaked action.
Rice had a prime opportunity to score in the first part of the second half, but as the ball found the back of the net, the Owls were called offsides.
The second delay of the game occurred just a bit later with 30:46 left on the game clock. After a 90-minute delay, the squads were able to resume play.
The final 30 minutes of regulation was much like the rest of the game, with defense on both sides of the ball in control. The second half alone brought 10 Rice shots and nine Bobcat shots that were denied by the opposing defenses.
Texas State's defense remained strong going into overtime, denying the Rice offense a shot on goal. The Bobcats, however, had several opportunities late in the second overtime, but unfortunately they could not connect on four corner kicks.
The Bobcats ended the contest with 22 shots compared to 19 by the Owls. Natalie Gardini recorded nine saves for the Bobcats and Lynsey Curry tallied nine shots.
Coach Conner announced the game MVP's at the conclusion of the match.
Offensive - Lynsey Curry
Defensive - Michelle Bucy
MVP - Landry Lowe
