Soccer Battles Back To Force 2-2 Tie

Box Score

MOBILE, Ala. – In the first Sun Belt Conference contest in program history, the Texas State soccer team overcame a two goal deficit on Friday evening against South Alabama to comeback and force a 2-2 tie. With the tie, the Bobcats move to 3-5-2 overall and 0-0-1 in Sun Belt play.

Lynsey Curry and Maddie Nichols were the deciding factors in the Bobcat offense that allowed Texas State to tie it up.

South Alabama got on the board first in the contest, just over a minute in a half into the game. The Jaguars' Clarissa Hernandez connected on a cross pass from the right side by Lauren Allison.

The Bobcats first prime scoring opportunity came 10 minutes into the half, yet the Bobcat offense struggled to put all of the pieces of the puzzle together.

Then in the 15th minute of the contest, the Jaguars' Hernandez found the back of the mesh once again for her second goal of the game. Allison collected her second assist of the game after the goal that put the Jaguars up 2-0.

Not quite five minutes later, Lynsey Curry answered with a goal of her own, bringing the Bobcats within one. Kristen Champion was credited with the assist on Curry's goal as she gave her the pass from 40-yards out before Curry took her shot that found the left corner of the net.

The squads went into the half practically even on all levels. The Jaguars recorded just one more shot than the Bobcats (11-10), but Texas State took one more corner than South Alabama (5-4).

The second half was a true defensive battle for both squads for the first 40 minutes of the second half until Lynsey Curry created the perfect pass to Maddie Nichols that allowed for her to find a hole in the Jaguar defense. Nichols scored by getting a shot off from the left side that found the back right corner of the net. The goal was her first of the season.

That goal forced the teams to go into overtime and it would ultimately be the final goal of the contest.

Texas State finished the game with 22 shots compared to 25 by the Jaguars.

Coach Conner named the MVP's at the conclusion of the contest.

Offensive – Lynsey Curry

Defensive – Entire back line plus Natalie Gardini

MVP – Maddie Nichols

The Bobcats will continue their Alabama road trip as they travel to Troy for a 1 p.m. kickoff on Sunday.
