Texas State Tries to Stay Hot in WAC

San Marcos, Texas – Texas State is sporting a four-game winning streak and is looking for more as the Bobcats travel to San Jose, Calif., to face Western Athletic Conference opponent San Jose State. The Spartans are four games back from first place in the conference and three back from the Bobcats who sit third behind CSU Bakersfield and UT Arlington, tied at the top.

This weekend fans will see redshirt freshman Jeremy Hallonquist make his first weekend start of his career. The Bobcat has been pitching well as of late and the coaching staff was so impressed that they gave him the Saturday to show what he has. He'll be facing another player with limited experience as the Spartans trot out freshman righty Ross Slaney, sporting a cool 24.00 ERA in just a few innings of work.

Texas State may be hitting its stride at the plate, doubling the team's home run total in just the last three games. Austin O'Neal hit two while Cody Lovejoy and Morgan Mickan both knocked their first career home runs.

Complete Game Notes

Bobcat Bits
New Man on the Mound: Jeremy Hallonquist will get the Saturday start in this weekend's series, his first weekend start of his career. The redshirt freshman does have two starts on the season, both coming in the midweek and both coming against two of the toughest opponents Texas State faced: at Oregon and at Texas. In eight appearances this season, Hallonquist has been a bit up and down. He gave up three earned runs twice at Texas and once at Oregon, but in his other five appearances, he's only allowed one run. His earned run average currently sits at 5.51, but that's not a good reflection of how well he's pitched lately.

Austin Bursts onto the scene: Austin O'Neal was seeing limited time most of this season, only starting when Texas State faced a lefty pitcher. This past weekend, however, he used the opportunity against Louisiana Tech's lefty Saturday to burst onto the scene. He went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer to stake his claim on a Sunday start as well. On Sunday, he knocked his second home run en route to a 3-for-5, four-RBI day. Before that weekend, he was batting .229 with 11 hits and six RBI, but he jumped to .298, 17 hits and more than doubled his RBI count to 13 after the weekend. His feats earned him recognition as the Western Athletic Conference's Player of the Week, his first such award of the season.

Stumph is back: Senior designated hitter Andrew Stumph made his return to the lineup for the Bobcats against Sacramento State, but he didn't show he was all the way back until the midweek game against Texas. He was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI against the Longhorns and followed that with an impressive weekend against Louisiana Tech. Since getting just one hit in 12 at bats against Sacramento State, Stumph has exploded to go 9-for-19 (.474) with eight RBI in the past five games. He made three pivotal hits, one each day, against Louisiana Tech. Friday, he notched the only RBI of the game to win it, and he tied the game with RBI hits on both Saturday and Sunday. For the season, Stumph is averaging .310 with 26 hits and 18 RBI.

Climbing up the record books: Speaking of Andrew Stumph, he is making his way up the Texas State record books this season. After this past weekend, he is now fifth all-time in games played (188) and at bats (680). He is sixth in RBI (125). He's seventh in hits (194) and 9th in total bases (272). He has a little bit of company in the books as Morgan Mickan made his way in this past weekend with his 25th stolen base to put him 15th all-time. Mitchell Pitts makes it a trio as he is seventh in appearances (61), eighth in innings pitched (211.2) and 13th in strikeouts (160).

Closing 'Em Out: Texas State has found two reliable arms to close out games with lefty Donnie Hart and righty Hunter Lemke. Hart has been on fire, owning a 0.00 ERA in 21.1 innings pitched. He's only given up 10 hits and one unearned run while striking out 20 and holding opponents to a mere .139 batting average. Meanwhile, Lemke has six saves and a 2.70 ERA in 26.2 innings pitched. He's struck out 23 and is holding opponents to a .232 batting average. The duo has combined for 48 appearances, and Head Coach Ty Harrington has taken to playing them back to back with Hart taking the seventh or eighth inning and Lemke shutting it down in the eighth or ninth.
