Foster, Mathis, Wade Named to SLC 1990s All-Decade Men’s Basketball Team

San Marcos, Texas – Three former Texas State men's basketball players have been named to the Southland Conference 1990s All-Decade Men's Basketball Team, the conference announced today as part of its year-long 50th Anniversary commemoration. Jeff Foster (1996-99), Donte Mathis (1996-99), and Lynwood Wade (1992-94) were three of 21 players selected to the team.

"I can't think of any player in my coaching career that had more to do with changing a program and impacting winning than Lynwood Wade,” said former Bobcat head coach Jim Wooldridge.

Wade, a native of Muskogee, Okla. played for the Bobcats from 1992-94. In his senior year at Texas State, the Bobcats won the 1994 SLC Tournament, and for his top performance Wade was named Most Valuable Player. It was Texas State's first NCAA Division I postseason appearance. Wade currently ranks 17th all-time on the Texas State charts in career points (1,061) and career rebounds (529). He finished the 1993-94 season with 593 points, the seventh-most points scored by a player in a single season. Wade was also a two-time SLC First Team honoree, and was voted the 1993 SLC Newcomer of the Year.

“It's difficult to summarize in a sentence.  I can't imagine any two players making a greater impact on a program or a conference than Jeff and Donte,” said former Bobcat head coach Mike Miller. “Jeff Foster is not only the best rebounder that I have ever coached, but he is the toughest competitor that I have been with.  I always felt confident with him on my team.”

Foster, a native of San Antonio was a member of the Bobcat basketball team from 1996-99. While playing for Texas State, Foster helped lead the Bobcats to their second NCAA Tournament appearance in 1997. Two years later as a senior, Foster played a major role in Texas State winning the 1999 SLC Regular Season crown. He currently holds the Texas State career blocked shots record with 111, and is fourth all-time in rebounds with 931. A two-time All-Southland Conference Team member, Foster was selected in the first round of the 1999 NBA Draft by the Golden State Warriors and traded to the Indiana Pacers, where he played for 13 years.

“Donte Mathis played the game with such passion and energy that he had the unique ability to elevate the performance of his entire team,” said Miller. “We always knew that he would come and perform every day.”

Mathis, a native of San Antonio played for Texas State from 1996-99. Mathis is the only Texas State player in school history to be named SLC Player of the Year (1999). The three-time All-Southland Conference Team member ranks third all-time in career points (1,622) and in field goals made (596). Mathis started 99 games in his career – the most by any Bobcat basketball player. During Mathis' time at Texas State, the Bobcats won the SLC Regular Season title twice (1997 and 1999), and the SLC Tournament crown once (1999).

“Over the years I have told stories about these two guys and the impact that they made on my teams and how much fun they were to coach,” Miller said. “They are HIGH CHARACTER people.”
