San Marcos, Texas – Joel Wright produced another solid performance on offense tonight, but it wasn't enough to give Texas State the win. Texas State fell to Denver, 79-64, today at Strahan Coliseum.
Wright registered his fourth double-double of the season, as the junior transfer finished with 33 points and tied his career-high of 12 rebounds. Basil Brown chipped in nine points. The Bobcats (7-16, 3-8 WAC) were outscored in the paint, despite getting 44 points from their bench.
Denver (13-8, 9-2 WAC) was able to control from the tip after jumping out to a 9-4 run to start the game. The Pioneers led by as many as 12 points in the first half, but a dunk by Wright cut it to seven to end the period.
The Pioneers went on a 7-0 run to start the second half, before Brown hit a jumper to give Texas State its first points of the period. Wright slammed down a dunk, followed by a three-pointer by Phil Hawkisn to cut Denver's lead to 11 with just under eight minutes to go in the game. With six minutes to go, Wright recorded a layup to bring Texas State to within nine points, and that is the closest the Bobcats would get with time winding down.
Denver finished the game 4-for-5 from the floor in the final four minutes of play to earn the victory. Texas State wasn't able to catch an offensive rhythm as it suffered its second straight loss.
The Bobcats trailed by seven points at the half after shooting 33.3 percent from the field compared to 52.4 percent by Denver. Wright was the ring leader of the Bobcat offense, tallying 15 points in the half.
Denver had four players score in double figures. Brett Olson led the Pioneers effort with 22 points. Royce O'Neale added 14 points and five rebounds, while Chris Udofia had 12 points and six rebounds. Jalen Love also chipped in 12 points. The Pioneers shot 55.3 percent from the floor.
